Both Nico Johnson and C.J. Mosley were big time recruits coming to Alabama. Playing time came right away for the two middle linebackers. Here’s what I wrote about the two in today’s paper.
TUSCALOOSA — Nico Johnson and C.J. Mosley know a little something about growing up in a hurry.
When necessity required them to play at Alabama, both were only true freshmen. Forget learning the complex Tide defense bit by bit. For Johnson and Mosley, it was play now and ask questions in January.
Different circumstances in back-to-back years required the rapid ascension of depth charts, but both linebackers now have experience as the Tide linebackers enter a big year.
Along with marquee names Dont’a Hightower and Courtney Upshaw and a deep bench, the second layer of the Alabama defense isn’t downplaying its role.
“This year, we take it among ourselves to lead this defense,” said Johnson, a junior.
Added Johnson: “Not just defense — the team, everybody. We’ll put it on our back. If that’s what it takes, we’re going to do it. We’re going to get it done. And everybody from me, Dont’a, C.J. — we’re working hard pushing everybody. It’s fun.”
