Alabama second-least penalized team nationally

You’re going to have to read more about this tomorrow, but I just got done writing about Alabama’s penalty situation. Really, it doesn’t have one.

The Tide commits just three penalties a game. Only Navy (2.8 per game) is more disciplined while Colorado ranks last in FBS with 9.6.

In case you wanted to examine all 15 Alabama flags from this season, here is a handy game-by-game guide.

Richardson climbing Heisman polls

A stiff-arm pose? (AP photo)

I know it’s almost insultingly too early in the season to start talking about the stiff-armed trophy awarded in December. But after Trent Richardson rolled up another 181 yards Saturday at Florida, Heisman voters are jumping on the bandwagon.

At least two websites out there poll ballot-holders every week to take the temperature of the Heisman race.  After a fourth-straight 100-plus yard game, Richardson is gaining support.

Both have him fourth currently, but on the rise. Stanford’s Andrew Luck continues to lead the way.

It’s hard to imagine Richardson’s numbers will sag much facing Vanderbilt and Ole Miss the next two weeks.

McCarron not lacking confidence

AP photo

AJ McCarron might be the most talked about Alabama football player not named Trent Richardson. Today we take a look at his first five games as Alabama’s starting quarterback.

TUSCALOOSA — If Barrett Jones had any questions about the player he protects, they vanished Saturday night in Gainesville, Fla.

Alabama’s starting left tackle proudly watched quarterback AJ McCarron “briefly follow” Florida’s 282-pound defensive lineman Dominique Easley in disgust.

McCarron wasn’t taking lightly the late hit Easley had dealt him, and all 90,000 in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium watched the lanky quarterback make his

move.

There’s a confidence in McCarron’s step five games into his first year as the Crimson Tide’s starter behind center.

“We love to see when our quarterback hops up from a big hit,” Jones said. “He’s not laying on the ground and moaning. He’s hopping up, and he’s ready to go back and play. Next play we sneak it in, or maybe two plays later. That was a great series for us.”

Even without a public proclamation of his official status as the No. 1 quarterback, McCarron has taken every meaningful snap since sharing time with Phillip Sims in the season opener. The two are still listed as co-starters on the depth chart released Monday, but the offense is clearly McCarron’s entering Saturday’s 6 p.m. visit from Vanderbilt (3-1, 1-1 SEC).
