Updating the pen pal story from October

If you remember back a few months ago, I wrote about a class of third graders who pens letters to Alabama football players every week.

Well, they haven’t stopped yet. Teacher Emily Heisler of Mount Laurel Elementary in Shelby County said the weekly ritual continues and a few more students have met their players.

Reserve running back Ben Howell wrote back to his pen pal who “almost fainted he was so excited. He was shaking so much when he saw the envelope from The University that he could hardly open it!” Heisler said via email.

Several other players including Carson Tinker, Barrett Jones, and William Vlachos promised they’d write back at some point.

I also wrote about Molly who met her pal Courtney Upshaw after a game early in the season. They still keep in touch through post game talks at the family’s tailgating tent on the quad.

Landry and Eddie Lacy after the Ga. Southern game.

Then there is Landry, another third grader in Heisler’s class. He writes both D.J. Fluker and Eddie Lacy. She got a chance to meet both after the Georgia Southern game on Nov. 19.

Her mother, Regis Holt, described the meeting in an email: “I introduced him to Landry and he looked at her and laughed and said ‘so you’re Landry.’ As you can see in the picture he completely caught her off guard when he reached down and picked her up. Landry is a pretty shy little girl and I’m not sure if she said a word.”

Just a fun little update for your Friday afternoon. Enjoy your weekend.

Les Miles reponds to our now-famous "nice hat" video

LSU coach Les Miles met with reporters in Baton Rouge today and a familiar topic was discussed.

According to the Twitter feed of LSU beat writer Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the infamous “nice hat” video I shot in New York was discussed.

Update: Here’s the full transcript of what Miles said thanks to the video posted on the LSU official website:

“Oh yeah, that was at the Heisman, right? Yeah, there was a bunch of folks on the outside there with a hat very similar to yours, and I do understand that there is a great following in college football for every team and I really kind of enjoy the fans that are for their team. I really do.

“And that was a pretty nice hat.”

In case you’re unfamiliar with the video, here it is. It’s been viewed more than 40,000 as of Friday afternoon.

Report: Kirby Smart interviews at Southern Miss

It’s been almost two days since this computer was well enough for an update. Now that it’s back from the health clinic for technology, the fun resumes.

In coaching news, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart could be in the running for another job. According to the Hattiesburg American, he interviewed for the head job at Southern Miss this week.

There are a handful of names in mix and this isn’t the first job he’s been connected with. There were reports of Ole Miss’ interest and an interview with Texas A&M last week.

As of Friday morning, Smart is the only coordinator at Alabama and Auburn who plans on returning for next season. Tide offensive coordinator Jim McElwain took the top job at Colorado State earlier this week, but will return to coach in the BCS title game.
