Updating SEC basketball standings

The Alabama basketball team is all over the map this season. The four-game SEC losing streak was followed by a three straight wins. Last night’s 68-50 beating of Auburn was No. 3.

So, that means what in the SEC standings? Remember the divisions washed into the Gulf after last summer’s SEC meetings in Destin.

Mississippi State would hold a slight lead if there was still a West Division. But there isn’t, so Alabama settles for fifth in the 12-team standings.

Of its final seven regular-season games, five involve teams below the Tide in the standings and four of the final six will be in Tuscaloosa. So stay tuned to see how this turns out.

Game day atmosphere video from hostile Auburn Arena

This may be the first in the series from a basketball game this season. So check out the sights-and-sounds look inside Auburn Arena as the Tide took care of the Tigers, 68-50. Look closely and you can see one of the referees eject an Auburn student coming out of halftime.

One more video to follow in a bit. Stick around.

The Alabama-Auburn basketball game story

In case you wanted to read the story that ran in today’s newspaper, here it is. Some video is coming soon. Stick around for that.

AUBURN — Call it a technical knockout.

First came the technicals, then the knockout.

Riding the momentum of three first-half post-play whistles, Alabama seized control in what became a 68-50 rout at Auburn.

The Tigers were called for three technical fouls in the opening 20 minutes as the Crimson Tide turned a seven-point deficit into an 11-point halftime lead. It was only the Tigers’ second loss in an Auburn Arena that quickly turned hostile.

JaMychal Green’s 19 points paced the Tide, winners of three straight, in its first game without suspended Tony Mitchell. The Alabama bench outscored Auburn’s 28-9 with Charles Hankerson leading the subs with 14. Frankie Sullivan was the only Tiger to reach double figures with 21 points.

Tension peaked after the third technical foul was called in the closing seconds of the half. Tiger coach Tony Barbee earned that one after Kenny Gabriel and Chris Denson each got one for hanging on the rim after dunks.

Gabriel’s put Auburn up 14-7 with 11:44 left, but the 12-4 run Tide run gave Alabama its first and last lead of the game.

Denison’s technical, which sent the sold-out crowd of 8,154 even further into a frenzy, came with 2:16 left. Again, Alabama took advantage. The guests scored the final eight points of the half to take an 11-point to the intermission.

“There were some tough calls that went against us in the first half,” said Tiger Varez Ward, who scored three points and had six turnovers. “Things just went downhill from there.”

Carson Tinker attends, is mentioned in governor’s state of the state

Tinker (AP photo)

Alabama long snapper Carson Tinker’s story of tragedy and triumph is known around the world by now. He lost his girlfriend Ashley Harrison in the April 27, 2011 tornado that destroyed parts of Tuscaloosa.

His strength through those heartbreaking times became an inspiration the world over. Tinker was part of Alabama Governor Robert Bentley’s first state of the state address Tuesday night. Here’s what he said about Tinker:

“We also see it in Carson Tinker. By now you may have heard Carson’s story.

One of the 62 tornadoes that tore across Alabama last spring ripped Carson’s house, and his life apart.

Carson was injured after being thrown 100 yards. He lost his home. And more importantly, like so many people across this state he lost someone he dearly loved.

What you may not realize is that Carson has the most thankless job in football. He snaps the ball on punts and field goals. He’s a Long snapper. No one will notice if he’s perfect. They’ll only notice if he’s made a mistake.

Despite his injuries, despite his personal tragedies, Carson didn’t make a single bad snap in his career. He did his job to perfection, and he helped his team achieve the ultimate goal.

Carson, would you please stand?

In these tough times, let’s follow the example of people like Carson Tinker.

Let’s pull together in the face of adversity, do our jobs to the best of our ability, and let’s serve the people who sent us here.”
