The Alabama pairing at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am surged from als0-ran to almost-contender Friday afternoon.
Football coach Nick Saban and former Tide golfer Bud Cauley combined to shoot a 9-under 61 in the best-ball format. The two entered the day tied for 79th, but the big round leaves them tied for 22nd.
Saban and Cauley played Monterey Peninsula Country Club on Friday and will play the main Pebble Beach course Saturday
They’d be in the hunt if it weren’t for Padraig Harrington and businessman JP McManus. The two are 25-under par after two rounds of 57 and 60. The next-best team is 18-under.
On the professional side of the event, Cauley was three shots under par Friday to jump from 77th to 37th.
Cauley played at Alabama before turning pro last summer. He’s currently 32nd on the FedEx Cup leaderboard after winning $175,993 in four tournaments.
