Tide No. 4 in best uniform poll

These folks believe Alabama has the fourth best uniform in college football.

Michigan is first, Texas second and Southern California is third. By the way, Auburn is 22nd. Others of note are Oregon (8), Miami (12) and Notre Dame (13).

What do you think?

No flying under the radar for Julio

AP photo by John Amis
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones works out during a training camp session.

If former Alabama receiver Julio Jones was trying for a nice, under-the-radar time in the Atlanta Falcons’ camp, he is failing miserably.

He’s just too good and making too many plays to be ignored, according to an ESPN.com NFL blog.

Jones caught 54 passes for 959 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie last season, even though he missed three games. He wasn’t completely healthy for several others.

“In my mind, he missed five and a half games,’’ Falcons coach Mike Smith told the ESPN.com blog. “If you extrapolate his numbers out, it’s a monster year. We know he’s going to impact the game.’’

But as Jones often did at Alabama, he downplays his accomplishments. That should be familiar to Crimson Tide fans.

“I did all right,’’ Jones told the blog. “I could have done so much better. I was coming off the foot surgery and I couldn’t really work out in the offseason. My whole core was weak, and coming out here and running full speed and my hamstring kind of gave way.’’

Bengals coach: Dre will be ready for opener

Former Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick will be ready for the Cincinnati Bengals’ season opener. At least, that’s according to the head coach, Marvin Lewis.

Kirkpatrick injured his knee recently, but Lewis told a Cincinnati radio station, “It’s really a minor injury and unfortunately too much has been made of this.”

Here’s the link, including how much Lewis didn’t like Kirkpatrick posting about his injury on Twitter: bit.ly/OyFqQ6

Mark Ingram rebounds from off-season surgery

AP photo by Gerald Herbert
Mark Ingram runs through a drill at the New Orleans Saints’ training camp.

Former Alabama standout Mark Ingram is limited in some New Orleans Saints practices this preseason, but reports say that it’s simply a precaution.

When Ingram goes through a full practice, the Saints then limit him the next day. He had off-season surgery to fix a turf-toe problem that kept him out of the final two 2011 regular-season games. He also missed the postseason. In addition, he had arthoscopic knee surgery in the off-season.

Ingram rushed for 471 yards last season as a rookie, but he told reporters after practice recently that he is ready for a bigger role.

“The rookie year was just a complete learning experience, just coming in, being familiar with my teammates, getting comfortable with my coaches, the organization, the playbook and everything else,” Ingram said in quotes distributed by the Saints. “I learned the playbook last year and this offseason, just studying it and watching film. Your second year in the NFL, I think you grow a little bit more.

“It was similar to your freshman year in college. My freshman year, I did some good things. My sophomore year, I grew into a better player by learning offense and learning how to read defenses. I just think your second year in the league you grow more as a player and I think that could bring some more success.”

As for the injuries, Ingram said, “I’m feeling good. I’m just taking it one day at a time. I feel good out there running and cutting. I feel healthy, I feel strong and I feel fast. It’s just about staying healthy, keeping the maintenance up on it and making sure I maintain that health throughout the whole season. That’s the number one priority is getting better and staying healthy.”

Ex-Tide star excited about Bills’ defensive line

AP photo by David Duprey
The Buffalo Bills’ Marcell Dareus (99) puts a move on the Bills’ Sam Young (71) during training camp Sunday.

Marcell Dareus is entering his second season with the Buffalo Bills, and he’s upbeat about this year’s defensive line.

Dareus was the subject of one of my favorite lines of the 2010 season. After Dareus’ dominating performance in that year’s Capital One Bowl win over Michigan State, Michael Rosenberg of the Lansing State Journal wrote: “It is hard to pinpoint exactly when this Capital One Bowl started going poorly for Michigan State, but it was probably the moment when Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus was born.”

Anyway, here’s the link to the story about Dareus and the Bills: bit.ly/OxFCPA (This links to a subscription website, but this story is free for everyone.)

Trent’s big day at Browns camp

AP photo by Tony Dejak
Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita tries to bring down Trent Richardson on Sunday.

Did you expect anything else?

Former Alabama running back Trent Richardson showed a Cleveland Browns record training camp crowd of 4,200 Sunday why the team spent the No. 3 pick of the draft on him.

It was the Browns’ first day in full pads, and Richardson shined.

According to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report, Richardson had several nice runs, including one after catching a screen pass from quarterback Brandon Weeden.

“Oh, yeah, I really get to do what I do best (in pads),” he was quoted as saying by The Plain Dealer. “I get to bounce off guys, get to try to run guys over, break tackles or whatever. I think when I get in full pads, it’s a whole ‘nother me. Not to be cocky or nothing, that’s just my confidence in my game, and that’s just what I’m blessed with.”

Olympics update: Tide swimmer fails to advance

The last current Alabama swimmer in the London Olympics was eliminated in the 200-meter butterfly today.

Swimming for Romania, Alexandru Coci finished fifth in his heat in 1 minute, 59.67 seconds. That wasn’t good enough to advance to the semifinals. Only the top 16 out of 37 competitors advanced, and Coci’s time was 29th.

Ex-Tide linebacker “walks on” with Falcons

If guys who try out to play for a college team without a scholarship are called walk-ons, can we use the same term for players who sign with an NFL franchise as an undrafted free agent?

Linebacker Jerrell Harris wasn’t drafted this past spring, but signed with the Atlanta Falcons, who gave him a signing bonus of $4,000. That’s not exactly the same kind of money Trent Richardson got from the Cleveland Browns.

But according to a story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution (bit.ly/MeHf8t), Harris is giving the Falcons their money’s worth and more. He is working with the third-team defense.

Olympics: Tide’s Coci will swim Monday

Alabama swimmer Alexandru Coci is slated to compete is the men’s 200-meter butterfly for Romania on Monday morning.

Coci is one of two current Crimson Tide athletes competing in the London Olympics. Kristel Vourna, who swims for Greece, advanced last week to the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter butterfly before falling. She finished 12th, but only the top eight advanced to the finals.

Eryk Anders wins again in MMA

Former Alabama standout Eryk Anders won his MMA fight Saturday night at Birmingham’s Boutwell Auditorium.

He won in three rounds by judges’ decision over Nathan Gaylord, who entered with a 7-0 record. Anders is now 7-1 after starting the sport in the summer of 2011.

According to his Facebook fan club, Anders will fight again Aug. 25 in Tuscaloosa.

Here’s an interview Anders did in the week leading up to his fight with Gaylord:

John Parker Wilson and the Atlanta Falcons

AP photo by John Amis
Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks John Parker Wilson, right, and Matt Ryan work out during an NFL football training camp session Saturday.

John Parker Wilson is still third on the quarterback depth chart as he enters his fourth season with the Atlanta Falcons.

Matt Ryan is still the starter, and Chris Redman is No. 2. Redman got in five games last season and threw 28 passes.

The Falcons have signed a fourth quarterback, undrafted free agent Dominique Davis of East Carolina. He began his career at Boston College, oddly enough as Ryan’s backup. Davis is expected to challenge Wilson for the No. 3 spot.

Wilson, who started for Alabama’s 12-2 team in 2008, hasn’t gotten into an NFL regular-season game, but he has played in a handful of preseason contests. In eight games during 2009-11, Wilson has completed 77 out of 135 passes for 644 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.

Sure, it’s not much, but how many people can say they’ve been on an NFL roster for three years?

Dugas still hitting in minor leagues

In his first season of professional baseball, ex-Alabama outfielder Taylor Dugas hardly looks like a rookie.

Playing for the New York Yankees’ Class Single-A team in Staten Island, N.Y., Dugas leads the team in batting average (.314) and on-base percentage (.482). He has 33 hits in 30 games.

According to Alabama’s media relations department, Dugas posted a career batting average of .360 in his four years with the Crimson Tide and is the school’s all-time leader in hits (334), singles (235), doubles (67) and triples (18).

Dugas is continuing the long relationship with the University of Alabama and the New York Yankees, which dates back to the 1930s. Baseball Hall of Fame performer Joe Sewell, a former Alabama star player and coach, was part of the Yankees’ lineup in 1931-33, helping the Bronx Bombers to win the 1932 World Series. Alabama graduate Mel Allen served as the team’s play-by-play broadcaster during 1939-64.

Former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant were friends. Steinbrenner, a former college football assistant coach, idolized Bryant and attended a couple of Alabama home games in the 1970s. He also had his Yankees play a few exhibition games against Alabama’s baseball team in the 1970s and 1980s. Elston Howard Jr., son of a former Yankees star, played baseball at Alabama.

The Yankees’ major league roster includes former Alabama reliever David Robertson, a key part of the New York bullpen. Alabama assistant coach Andy Phillips played for the Yankees during 2004-07.
