Jesse Williams and the 600 Club

The day after Alabama senior defensive lineman Jesse Williams created a firestorm on Twitter after bench pressing 600 pounds, the onslaught of discussion has slowed but hasn’t stopped.

Nationally syndicated radio host Jim Rome (@jimrome) of Los Angeles tweeted about Williams today: “Alabama behemoth @ThaMonstar recently benched 600 pounds?! What?! Never heard of that.  What’s he squat? A Grrr?  Dude benched 6-hundo?!”

Teammate Anthony Steen (@bamasteen61) joked with Williams (@ThaMonstar) about how often the Australian was retweeting the talk of his accomplishment: “Bout to stop following u!! The last 200 tweets have been of u RT u doing 600 …”

Alabama kicker Cade Foster (@cadefoster01) tweeted this: “Maxed out on bench at 455 Lbs!  Stoked! .. Until @ThaMonstar put up 600! Dude is a beast!” (Side note: It’s amazing to think of a kicker who bench presses 455 pounds. How many lineman do some schools have who can do that?”)

Williams, who is from Australia, is listed at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds and should start at nose tackle for the Crimson Tide.

Remember the 1980s hit “Land Down Under” from Men at Work, the band from Australia? Google helps with locating the lyric of that song that comes to mind: “Buying bread from a man in Brussels; he was 6-foot-4 and full of muscle.”
