Former Alabama track and field sprinter Kirani James won the gold medal in the 400-meter dash at the London Olympics today.
James, who is the first athlete from Grenada to win a gold medal, ran for Alabama in 2010 and 2011. He won in 43.94 seconds, which is his personal best. Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic won silver in 44.46, just ahead of bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago.
Gordon posted the top time in Sunday’s semifinals with 44.58.
Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius did not make the finals after finishing eighth in the same semifinal that James won. However, James showed Pistorius respect by approaching him afterward on the track and asking to exchange bib numbers. Pistorius agreed.
