Tide wins, but Tide also loses in U.S. Amateur golf

Justin Thomas beat Alabama teammate Bobby Wyatt 1-up in their U.S. Amateur golf round of 16 match this afternoon.

In the morning matches, Wyatt rallied to beat Matthew Stieger of Australia 3-up. Stieger was 3-up after five holes. Thomas scored a 3-and-1 victory over Max Homa of Valencia, Calif.

Playing at the par-71, 7,409-yard Cherry Hills Country Club for a spot in the quarterfinals, Wyatt was 2-up through six holes, but Thomas rallied to go all square after eight. Thomas was 2-up through 12 holes before Wyatt battled back to tie it after 15.

Thomas won the 17th hole to take the lead for good.

Jerry Pate in 1974 is the only Alabama player to win a U.S. Amateur. Michael Thompson was the last Alabama player to reach the finals, finishing runner-up at The Olympic Club in 2007.
