The National Football Foundation has named Alabama center Barrett Jones as the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes academics, athletic accomplishment and community service.

He received the award Tuesday night in New York.

Charles Barkley famously said ‘I’m not a role model.’ I think the fact is, with all the exposure college athletes get today, we are role models,” Jones said in a news release. “I think everyone sitting here are people that use that status in a positive way. I’m very grateful to be sitting on stage with 14 other worthy candidates.”

Notre Dame’s bowl prep sounds a lot like Alabama’s

Notre Dame is handling the long break between the regular season and the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship Game about like Alabama is.

Then again, Irish coach Brian Kelly talked to other coaches about how to deal with the layoff, and more than one team has examined the way Nick Saban and his staff prepare for the BCS game. After all, he is 3-0 in national title contests.

Click here to read an Associated Press story about Notre Dame’s preparations. Here’s a small taste:

Last week and this week, Irish players have been focusing on conditioning, weightlifting and school work. It’s a chance for players who may have lost a few pounds to get back up to weight and gain strength, he said. Notre Dame will hold its first practices on Friday and Saturday, then hold six more practices before players head home Dec. 21. They’ll return to campus for practices Dec. 28-31, and then leave for Miami on Jan. 2. They will practice three times in Florida before the game.

The early practices will have a preseason camp feel stressing fundamentals and giving younger players more work, then begin to fine tune the practices for Alabama as the game draws nearer, Kelly said.

Gymnastics coaches put Alabama No. 1 in preseason poll

The national gymnastics coaches poll has placed two-time defending NCAA champion Alabama as the preseason No. 1. In the previous two seasons, Alabama opened at No. 2.

The preseason top 25 also includes all nine of Alabama’s 2013 opponents, including UCLA at No. 2, Florida at No. 3 and Oklahoma at No. 4. The Gators placed second in last season’s NCAA meet, while the Bruins were third.

“I had the same four teams at the top on my ballot,” Tide head coach Sarah Patterson said in a news release. “Although I had Florida at No. 1, and I feel they are the most talented team in the country and have been for the last several years.”

The Tide will face No. 8 LSU twice this season and will take on No. 11 Georgia and No. 12 Arkansas on the road. Alabama will also face off with No. 13 Auburn at midseason and will open on the road with No. 21 Missouri. This year’s Power of Pink meet will see the Tide take on No. 25 Kentucky in Coleman Coliseum.

The Alabama gymnastics program is good about providing a bunch of videos, including a legends series. The first covered Penney Hauschild, who was NCAA all-around champion in 1985 and 1986. In 1983, before Alabama had any of its six national titles, she led the Tide to its first NCAA championship meet. Alabama placed fourth. Here’s the legends video about her:

National Football Post mock draft includes five from Tide in first round

Yahoo! Sports has published the National Football Post’s mock draft for 2013, and the list includes five from Alabama in the first round.

Under this prediction, Tide guard Chance Warmack would go fourth to Philadelphia, while Detroit would use the 10th pick on cornerback Dee Milliner. After that, offensive tackle D.J. Fluker to Chicago at No. 25, center Barrett Jones to Green Bay at No. 26 and noseguard Jesse Williams to San Francisco at No. 27.

All five Alabama guys would go ahead of Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who is The Associated Press’ SEC defensive player of the year.

Here’s the link to the mock draft: click here. At the time of this posting, there’s one error that I’m sure they’ll fix eventually. Clearly, in moving names and adjusting who picks whom, they’ve left Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore in the seventh spot to Cleveland and the 12th selection to New Orleans. He’s good, but he’s not so good he can play for two teams at once.
