Alabama holds off Texas Tech rally

Alabama stopped a three-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 66-62 win at Texas Tech but not before watching a 20-point lead nearly evaporate.

The Crimson Tide led 55-35 with 12:04 to play before Tech steadily trimmed the advantage. With 1:14 to play, the Red Raiders cut it to 63-61 on Ty Nurse‘s 3-pointer. But Levi Randolph sank a basket, and Trevor Releford added a foul shot to hold off the Tech rally.

“We’ll take it,” Alabama coach Anthony Grant said. “The second half wasn’t what we drew up, but we’re happy with the win.”

Releford played 39 minutes and had 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Trevor Lacey had a team-high 21 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes on the floor.

“I thought those guys were aggressive and locked in,” Grant said. “I think in the second half, maybe fatigue set in. … But I’m really proud of the effort they gave in the minutes they played.”

Moussa Gueye, a 7-foot-0 junior, came off the bench to play 11 minutes and didn’t score. But he grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Texas Tech super-sub Jaye Crockett, the nation’s top-scoring reserve, finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor.

Alabama (7-3) will host Mercer on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Miss Universe pagent should give thanks for Twitter and Alabama noseguard Jesse Williams.

The annual event probably got its best ratings in Alabama, as Crimson Tide fans followed the progress of Renae Ayris, who is Miss Australia and represented Williams’ homeland. She finished third runner-up, while Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, won the crown.

Williams posted the Tweet above, which sent some of us to our televisions to see who he was tweeting about. You can see for yourself with the photo we’ve included.

Tide signs junior college player out of New York (two videos)

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Alabama has signed junior college offensive lineman Leon Brown, who will enroll in time to begin classes in January.

Brown, who is 6-foot-6 and 308 pounds, will participate in offseason conditioning and spring practice.

Brown is from Riverdale, Md., but played the last two years at ASA College in New York City. The Avengers went 9-0 in the regular season before losing 47-21 to Snow College in the Carrier Dome Bowl. Brown was a second-team All-Northeast Football Conference selection in 2012 at tackle.

Scout.com, ESPNU and 247sports.com rated him as a four-star prospect. He played for Parkdale High School in Riverdale where he as a first-team All-County selection in 2010. Brown chose the Crimson Tide over Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Rutgers and Tennessee.

We have video of Nick Saban commenting about ASA College a week ago while visiting the school. Below that is a video we found of Brown doing an interview with Brooklyn Independent Television a couple of months ago. He talks a little bit about Alabama at about the two-minute mark.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — The Crimson Tide worked out in full pads today in the second practice since returning to work this week.

It was clear that the linebackers were a point of emphasis — not Alabama’s linebackers, but Notre Dame’s linebackers and how the Tide offense will attack them.

Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier pressured his quarterbacks in dropback drills from the backside, emulating a situation in which a linebacker comes around the edge and beats an offensive tackle with speed. This required AJ McCarron, Blake Sims, Phillip Ely and Alec Morris — in that order — to make a quick step forward in the pocket before delivering the ball.

Also, the quarterbacks and wide receivers worked on a route combination that isolates linebackers. In the combination, the slot
wide receiver on the right side of the formation would run a shorter
drag route across the field (Chris Black, for instance, ran this route) while the other wide receiver, far out on the left side of the formation, would run a deeper in route to the middle of the field (fellow true freshman Amari Cooper was seen running that route).

In the running game, Alabama tight ends and H-Backs were seen working on running past defensive ends and hitting linebackers to help set up longer runs for the running backs.

On the injury front, center Barrett Jones worked with strength and
conditioning coach Scott Cochran on strength drills while using only his right foot. He held his injured left foot (encased in a light blue cast) in the air. Safety Jarrick Williams (preseason knee surgery) practiced with the safeties again with the black non-contact jersey, and can be seen in the video below (roughly the 1:30 mark).

Off the practice field, plenty of representatives from Daphne High watched, likely paying attention to a pair of their former standouts: linebacker Ryan Anderson and running back T.J. Yeldon.

Greg McElroy and Alabama’s history of starting QBs in the NFL

New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy gets the call for Sunday’s game against San Diego. (AP photo by Kathy Willens)

New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy will make his first professional start Sunday when his team hosts San Diego. It marks the first time a former Alabama quarterback has started in the NFL since Brodie Croyle led the Kansas City Chiefs for one game in 2010. The Chiefs lost 31-0 at San Diego.

Some other little factoids about Alabama quarterbacks starting in the NFL, with plenty of help from pro-football-reference.com:

–The last time a former Alabama quarterback started and won in the NFL was Nov. 15, 1987, when Jeff Rutledge led the New York Giants past the Philadelphia Eagles 20-17. Rutledge threw for 298 yards and led New York back from a 17-10 third quarter deficit. He was replacing the injured Phil Simms.

–Before Rutledge won two starts in 1987, the last Alabama quarterback to win as an NFL starter was Richard Todd. On his 31st birthday, Nov. 19, 1984, he quarterbacked the New Orleans Saints to a 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. The Saints trailed 17-13 in the fourth quarter before Todd rallied them.

–McElroy will be the third former Alabama quarterback to start for the Jets. Joe Namath started 126 games for them during 1965-76, and Todd started 94 during 1976-83. The last start came Dec. 16, 1983, when Todd threw for 230 yards in a 34-14 loss at Miami. The first came Sept. 26, 1965, when the Jets lost 33-21 at Buffalo as Namath threw for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

–The last time an Alabama quarterback started and won a playoff game was Jan. 15, 1983, when Todd led the Jets to a 17-14 win over the Raiders. New York won when Todd rallied the Jets to a late fourth-quarter touchdown.

Alabama started quarterbacks in the NFL and their teams’ records when they started:

Ken Stabler (1970-84), 96-49-1
Joe Namath (1965-78), 62-63-4
Bart Starr (1956-71), 94-57-6
Richard Todd (1976-85), 48-59-1
Scott Hunter (1971-79), 21-18-3
Harry Gilmer (1948-56), 0-10-0
Jeff Rutledge (1979-92), 2-7-1
Brodie Croyle (2006-10), 0-10-0
Steve Sloan (1966-67), 0-1-0

Saban: No matter what I say, nobody believes I want to stay

Alabama's Nick Saban says he's happy at Alabama. (AP photo by Jeff Roberson)

Alabama’s Nick Saban says he’s happy at Alabama. (AP photo by Jeff Roberson)

This is my story for today’s print editions:

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Alabama football coach Nick Saban says he isn’t headed to the NFL, despite speculation for weeks linking him to the Cleveland Browns job.

After the Crimson Tide completed its first practice for the BCS National Championship Game on Tuesday, Saban said he isn’t sure how to make the speculation go away.

“I’m not sure, regardless of what I say, that anybody believes what I say, because I say it all the time,” Saban said. “This is what we’re happy doing. This is what we like to do. But nobody really believes that.

“So, you know, maybe it doesn’t matter. I don’t know what I have to say or do, but it’s kind of funny to me.”

Saban is linked to Cleveland because he served four seasons there as defensive coordinator in 1991-94. Also, his agent is Jimmy Sexton of Memphis, who is the agent of the man man who is believed to be Cleveland’s next general manager, Mike Lombardi. The Browns’ current coach is Pat Shumur.

In a report Tuesday, ESPNCleveland.com claimed to have three sources saying there is “zero chance” Saban would join Lombardi in Cleveland.

Saban likely will be haunted forever by a comment he made Dec. 21, 2006, while coaching the Miami Dolphins when reports linked him to Alabama, which had fired Mike Shula: “I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the Alabama coach. … I don’t control what people say. I don’t control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I’m just telling you there’s no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here.”

Saban has said privately he didn’t handle that situation well. But he insisted Tuesday evening he plans to stay at Alabama, which is aiming for its third national title under Saban. The Crimson Tide can clinch the crown by beating Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 7.

“We’re really, really pleased and happy to be here,” Saban said. “We’ve been able to accomplish a lot.

“But like I’ve talked about before this is a work in progress all the time. You’ve got to stay focused on the process to try to continue to make the next game the most important game, the next season the most important season, developing the team every year. We certainly look forward to those challenges.”

Alabama senior defensive end Damion Square, one of the Tide’s three team captains, said Saban hasn’t addressed any coaching reports with the players.

“We don’t talk about that,” Square said. “It has nothing to do with this team.”

Saban finished his thought on the NFL speculation by joking about who makes his career decisions: his wife.

“Y’all asked the wrong person,” he said, smiling. “Miss Terry makes all the decisions about all this stuff anyway.”
