Mercer scores another win over Tide in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — The same Mercer Bears that lost by 29 to Denver — the university, not the Nuggets — knocked off Alabama 66-59 in Coleman Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The Crimson Tide led by 11 points with 10:26 to play but Mercer outscored Alabama 31-13 after that, including 8-0 in the final 1:19.

After a 6-0 start to the season, Alabama dropped to 7-4. Mercer also scored a win over Alabama on Nov. 16, 2008, which came during Mark Gottfried‘s last season as the Tide’s coach.

Alabama held its last lead when Rodney Cooper and Levi Randolph made back-to-back short jumpers to give the Tide a 59-58 advantage with 1:37 to play.

Mercer responded with two foul shots by Jakob Gallon. After the Tide’s Nick Jacobs made a turnover, Gallon aced a 3-pointer with 37 seconds to play.

Trevor Releford had 19 points, five rebounds and two steals for Alabama in 32 minutes on the floor. Rodney Cooper added 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of assists in 33 minutes.

Daniel Coursey, Mercer’s 6-foot-10 center, managed a game-high 20 points. Travis Smith had 17.
