STARKVILLE, Miss. — After taking the short trip from Tuscaloosa to Mississippi State University, Alabama went long range to beat the hometown Bulldogs.

The Crimson Tide nailed its first five 3-point tries in the second half and ran away from Mississippi State 75-43 on Wednesday night.

Trevor Lacey, who didn’t score in the first half, knocked down three 3-pointers after intermission. Levi Randolph hit one, and Rodney Cooper added another, capping a 15-0 run and turning an eight-point halftime advantage into a 45-22 lead. Alabama poured it on from there.

“I thought the story tonight was defense,” Alabama coach Anthony Grant said. “As well as we played offensively, I thought it was our defense that was good. … Our energy on defense in the second half was higher.”

Before the game, Humphrey Coliseum endured a power outage of about 45 minutes, with the lights not returning until about 45 minutes before tipoff. The game wasn’t delayed, but MSU remained in the dark the rest of the way. Alabama scored more points in the second half (45) than Mississippi State managed all night (43).

Cooper led Alabama (10-6, 2-1 SEC) with 19 points, while Randolph matched his career high with 18 points, which he also produced last year against Mississippi State (7-8, 2-1). Nick Jacobs had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

“I challenged our guys defensively before the game,” Grant said. “It’s no secret the last two games we weren’t where we needed to be defensively. Our guys took the challenge defensively and did a better job.”

The Bulldogs held their last lead with a little more than seven minutes left at 19-18. The Crimson Tide then got baskets from Randolph, Jacobs and Cooper each hit 2-pointers, and Alabama never trailed again.

Alabama did it without leading scorer Trevor Releford, a 6-foot-0 guard who averages 16.3 points a game. He injured his ankle during Monday’s practice and struggled to get through warmups.

The curious case of the girlfriend of Manti Te’o

Was Manti Te’o‘s dead girlfriend a hoax? A meticulously researched piece by deadspin.com seems to unravel the story of the Stanford girl and the Notre Dame linebacker, who led his team to the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama.

Yes, this is a Notre Dame story, not Alabama. But considering the Crimson Tide played against Te’o in the biggest game of the year, we thought you might have enough awareness and interest in Te’o to warrant posting this.

During a BCS National Championship Game news conference Jan. 3, Te’o was asked about his grandmother and girlfriend. Here is a transcript:

Question: Manti, how have the football-related commotion and excitement of the past year helped you get through the turmoil you’ve faced with your grandmother and girlfriend? And how have the quiet periods been for you, given you more time to reflect? Is that a good thing or double edged?

Te’o: I think whenever you’re in football, it takes your mind off a lot of things. You know, this team is very special to me, and the guys on it have always been there for me, through the good times and the bad times. I rarely have a quiet time to myself because I always have somebody calling me, asking, do you want to go to the movies. Coach is always calling me asking me, “Are you okay? Do you need anything?” I have three roommates, Zeke, Carlo and Robby Toma, who are always yelling at each other, who’s going to play Call of Duty. I’m rarely by myself, and that’s how I like it. I’m always around my guys, always around my family.

AJ McCarron‘s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, will work as a television correspondent for the Super Bowl. Here’s the Associated Press story:

NEW YORK (AP) — The beauty pageant queen who shot to social media stardom during the BCS championship will be back in front of the cameras for a big football game.

Former Miss Alabama USA Katherine Webb will serve as a correspondent for “Inside Edition” leading up to next month’s Super Bowl in New Orleans.

The girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, Webb became a star when ESPN’s cameras lingered on her during the Crimson Tide’s rout of Notre Dame on Jan. 7 and announcer Brent Musburger commented on her looks.

Webb calls the job “an honor and a dream come true.” She says she’ll “give fans an insider’s look at what goes on as the teams prepare to battle and as the fans get ready to cheer on their favorites.”

CBS said Wednesday she’ll start work Jan. 28.

Mel Kiper’s opinion of Barrett Jones improves

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. likes the versatility of Alabama All-America center Barrett Jones but isn’t listing him as a first-round choice for this year’s NFL draft.

“Obviously he has the injury to deal with. He’s in the second-round discussion,” Kiper said this morning in an ESPN conference call.

Kiper listed Jones as a third- or fourth-round possibility in a November conference call with reporters.

Kiper ranks Jones as the No. 2 center nationally behind Wisconsin’s Travis Frederick. Jones had surgery after the BCS National Championship Game to repair torn ligaments in his foot and will miss most pre-draft workouts.

Jones also played guard and tackle at Alabama: “Jones can played anywhere you want on the offensive line,” Kiper said.

Kiper lists Alabama’s D.J. Fluker as the “top guy at right tackle.”

The question surrounding Fluker before the season concerned his pass-protection abilities, but Kiper said Fluker answered that.

“I thought in pass protection this year did a great job,” he said. “I thought he held up a lot better in pass protection than I thought he would.”

As for Alabama guard Chance Warmack, Kiper said it’s possible he could go as high as sixth to Cleveland or seventh to Arizona. The last time Alabama had a guard go that high in the draft was John Hannah, an All-Pro who went fourth in 1973 to New England.

Kiper has Tide cornerback Dee Milliner going fourth to the Philadelphia Eagles, calling him the “elite corner” in the draft.

Videos of Tide quarterback recruit Luke Del Rio

Prep quarterback recruit Luke Del Rio already has enrolled at Alabama and joined winter workouts, and we have some high school video of him for you.

The son of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Luke spent his senior season at Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, Colo. He grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., where his father was the head coach of the NFL’s Jaguars for nine years. Alabama lists him at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds.

Although multiple recruiting services have said Del Rio is a walk-on, Alabama has not confirmed that.

We have video of Del Rio at the Columbus Elite 11 camp. Below that is a video that runs 4 minutes, 49 seconds and is a news story about Del Rio. At that time, he was an Oklahoma State commitment.
