Alabama lost in basketball to Auburn on Wednesday night. Here’s the Associated Press report:

AUBURN (AP) — Auburn rallied from a miserable first half for a 49-37 victory over Alabama on Wednesday night. It was the fewest points the Crimson Tide has scored in the rivalry.

Allen Payne and Josh Wallace each scored 11 points and came up big in the second half for the Tigers (9-13, 3-6 Southeastern Conference), who took control with a 16-0 run and held Alabama scoreless for more than nine minutes.

“We got outplayed in every phase of the game,” Tide coach Anthony Grant said. “Their focus, energy and effort was a lot better than ours. In the second half, it showed in that run they went on and our inability to score.”

The Tigers won despite managing just 13 points in the first half.

It was a season-low in points for Alabama (14-8, 6-3), which had won six of seven games and five straight in the rivalry. The Tide’s previous low this season was 50 points.

It was also the fewest points scored by either team in the series since 1949.

Payne scored nine points in the second half. Wallace, who was averaging 3.6 points, matched his season high — all in the second half.

Auburn mounted the comeback even with leading scorer Frankie Sullivan missing his first 11 shots in a 1-for-13, four-point performance.

Trevor Releford and Rodney Cooper led Alabama with 11 points each.

Trevor Lacey fouled out with six points, half his season average, and Levi Randolph missed all seven of his shots.

The Tide made just 6 of 25 shots (24 percent) in the second half and was 2 of 19 from 3-point range for the game.

Auburn was even colder to start before hitting 12 of 21 shots (57.1 percent) in the second half.

The Tigers, who had just three baskets by halftime, came out of the locker room with a 25-5 surge.

The Tide had a scoring drought of 9:21 after Cooper’s early 3-pointer.

“They outhustled us for loose balls,” Grant said. “They got out in transition and got layups. Their effort kept going up and we didn’t match that. We can’t do that.

“We need to look in the mirror because this was completely on us in terms of the energy we’re supposed to play with in a game that means as much as this one meant.”

Chris Denson gave Auburn a 38-28 lead on a drive with 6:25 left. The Tigers then scored five straight points after Cooper broke the scoreless stretch with a jumper.

Wallace scored on a drive and two free throws to push the lead to 44-31 with 2:10 remaining.

The Tigers hit just 3 of 23 shots (13 percent) before halftime to help Alabama build a 23-13 lead.

The starters made just one basket in 15 attempts.

Alabama jumped ahead 15-2 over the first 11 minutes, then the Tigers scored 10 straight. Releford scored six points to key an 8-1 run heading into the half before the Tide went into the big second half funk that left Grant bewildered.

“I can’t explain the lack of effort, the lack of energy, the lack of execution,” he said.

Nick Saban’s opening statement today

Here is Nick Saban‘s opening comment today at his National Signing Day news conference:

“Signing day is a culmination of a lot of hard work from a lot of people. There is no doubt that the assistant coaches do a good job of supporting as a staff, and this organization does a good job, but other than that, our administration, the university community here does a fantastic job of supporting us in every way. From Dr. Bonner to Dr. Witt to Mal Moore to just about everyone involved.

“The university faculty do a great job each weekend, visiting with guys and doing academic appointments. We have a tremendous amount of people here who contribute to the success that we have. Our recruiting program, because it is all about personal development, academic success, and guys having success on the football field that they’d like to have. Our coaching staff puts in a lot of time and energy, obviously, travel, evaluations, and get a lot of cooperation from high school coaches and other people who are trying to help young people be successful. All these things are really important in the culmination of having a good recruiting class. I think everybody probably always will say that we really like the guys that we got. We had a good recruiting year.

“But, again, I think it’s hard to make predictions about the guys you recruited today, and where they will be two or three years from now. We certainly like the guys that we got. They’ve shown a lot of potential to this point. They’ve been very successful in their production and performance. We feel like we have a really good character class, which is important to us, and we got a lot of guys who are the size and speed we want to play the positions we recruited them for. In some cases, we recruited athletes. But this class is not about rankings that really can’t get verified any way in the future. Just like when you buy a stock today, you can’t really verify where it’s going to be two years from now. The character we talk about, the commitment to a standard of excellence, the work ethic, the relentless quest to improve that these guys need to be able to enhance their development is very important to this group becoming a great recruiting class.

“That gets determined by their performance and how they develop down the road, which we’re responsible for. That’s what we’re here for. We’re here to help them to that. We’re pleased with the class academically, athletically, and from a character and attitude standpoint. I think it’s really appropriate for me to talk about the great fan support we have here, the great enthusiasm. The support we get at all of our games. The atmosphere and environment created by the passion we have here with our fans is something that — probably each and every one of these guys came to a game. And they saw that and wanted to be a part of that. They also went to other games at other places where our fans show up are very supportive of our team. That positive energy makes a huge impact on our ability to be successful here. It’s probably very important in the success we’ve been able to have here. Our players are someone else who do a good job of serving in the recruiting process, in terms of their time and attention to the young people. I think it’s
important that every guy who was committed to us signed with us today.

“I know on days like this, we only have so many spots, and you all list 42 guys in the newspaper, keep your eye on, that we might get today, and everybody focuses on the 40 guys we didn’t get. But we really only have so many spots to get them. We feel really good about the guys we were able to attract here. It’s the reality of recruiting that things happen this way. I wish we could give more opportunities to more people. But we all understand the rules we have to live in and with, that we’ve created, that are very fair for all of us. You can’t get every player. It’s not going to happen. We’re really pleased with the guys we have. I really do want to thank all the people who contributed to this recruiting class, whether it’s the university community, the academic staff, our coaching staff, the athletic administration here, who all contribute to the success of recruiting and set the table for us, and doing things we need to have a first-class program.

“Just because you pick the puppy dog with the biggest feet doesn’t mean it’s going to grow up to be the biggest or best hunting dog. That’s as simple as what I learned in West Virginia when I was little.”

Athletic Derrick Henry already impresses his roommate

A large, wide angle shot of Alabama’s new weight room has circulated on Twitter to the point of being picked up by national outlets.

The amount of weight some of the freak-of-nature athletes Alabama acquires would normally be enough to scare a grown man. But some athletes are big enough to scare their own teammates in the comfort of their own home.

That includes incoming freshman O.J. Howard, who is rooming with running back Derrick Henry, another newcomer who started classes in January.

“He scares me walking around the room at night,” Howard said. “He’s huge. He’s going to do great things this year. He’s up at night just doing pushups.”

Henry does not think much of the pushups.

“That’s just what I do. I’ve always done that, since I was a kid,” he said. “I don’t know why, it’s just a habit. It’s just something I do at night.

“I don’t really count. I just do them until I can’t do them anymore.”

Henry is hoping to do the same with drills and other techniques to help his chances at playing time for the 2013 season.

“I’m just trying to come up here and carry on a legacy,” Henry said. “Every day, I come up to the complex trying to learn what I can by watching film, learning plays, catching the ball, doing drills just so I can be ready for the spring and the offseason.”

Henry is getting plenty of motivation from what he saw freshman T.J. Yeldon do as a freshman in 2012, accumulating more than 1,000 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

“I paid a lot of attention since they were in my top three,” Henry said. “When I committed, I started watching a lot more and seeing how they run.”

With 25 signees on board, Tide sits at No. 1 in Rivals, 247sports rankings

Alabama picked up two more signees this afternoon when running back Alvin Kamara of Norcross, Ga., and defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson of Fort Worth, Texas. That gives the Crimson Tide 25 signees, and two recruiting services are willing to call the race for Alabama.

Scout.com has Alabama fourth behind No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 UCLA. Nobody has more signees ranked in Scout’s top 100 (Tide has 13) or Scout five-star players (Tide has five).

Alabama’s class now at 23 officially

Alabama now has 23 members of its signing class, as five-star linebacker Reuben Foster has faxed in his scholarship papers.

Foster is the consensus top-rated linebacker in the country and stands 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds. He created controversy by committing to Alabama, then switching to Auburn in July 2012, getting an Auburn tattoo, then announcing Monday he was committing to Alabama.

Either way, Alabama is getting a good linebacker.

Also, Walker Jones – brother of former Tide All-America lineman Barrett Jones and current Tide tight end Harrison Jones – has turned in his papers, too.

There still are three players out there who are Tide targets. Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson of Fort Worth, Texas, reportedly has told Texas and Alabama coaches he will sign with the Crimson Tide. His official announcement comes later today.

Running back Alvin Kamara of Norcross (Ga.) High will pick between Alabama and Georgia and is slated to announce his choice on ESPNU at 2:30 p.m.

Defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes of Placer High in Auburn, Calif., has an announcement scheduled for this evening.

Alabama confirms Tenpenny, Mazza have signed

Alabama lists North Little Rock (Ark.) High running back Altee Tenpenny and California long-snapper Cole Mazza as its 18th and 19th signees for its 2013 class.

Tenpenny rushed for 1,379 yards on 193 carries with 21 touchdowns. At 6-foot-0, 212 pounds, he is built a little like Eddie Lacy, the former All-SEC running back.

Tenpenny is accustomed to Alabama’s style of sharing carries among two running backs. Tenpenny shared rushing attempts at North Little Rock with Juan Day, a junior who has committed to Arkansas.

Mazza is from Liberty High in Bakersfield, Calif., who can replace long-snapper Carson Tinker, a three-year starter who has graduated.

Mazza generally is regarded as the nation’s top long-snapper.

In addition, he is a great track and field performer as well. He recorded the best long jump in New Jersey high school competition since Carl Lewis in 1979.
