Tide adds some help to the passing game

Even with Alabama’s 2013 signing class adding four running backs to the roster, the Crimson Tide didn’t forget about the passing game.

Alabama has brought in two top receivers (Robert Foster and Raheem Falkins) and tight end O.J. Howard. Foster caught 45 passes for 756 yards and 14 touchdowns as a high school senior, while Falkins added 47 receptions for 1,058 yards and 14 scores. Howard had 854 combined yards receiving and rushing.

The incoming pass-catchers are looking to build on Alabama’s passing game.

“A few years ago, Bama wouldn’t really pass a lot, but over the years it’s opened up a little,” Howard said. “When we have weapons like Robert, Amari (Cooper), Raheem to spread the field, you never know what might happen.”

The new wave of talent is not starting from scratch, however. Falkins is well aware of those who wore the crimson and white before him, such as NFL Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones.

“I paid attention, a lot,” the New Orleans native said. “He set records, goals for us to try to contribute, to keep going and going. I hope I can be half of the player he was.”

Falkins added about new teammate Cooper’s freshman season, “I applaud him for that. He came in and did a fantastic job on the field to have that kind of season and I look forward to working out with him.”

While Falkins is waiting to follow up on the reputation preceding him, Howard still has some questions to answer: his 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame makes him a good fit at both tight end and H-Back.

“I like both positions, it just depends on what they want me to do,” Howard said. “I can put weight on and play (tight end) or play H-Back. If it was up to me, man, I’d do both of them. I’d play a little bit of both of them.”
