First off, check out my main Alabama football team story in the Wednesday editions of the TimesDaily and Decatur Daily here on the Tide’s midseason report.
My notebook is here, leading with the emergence of freshman defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson.
Here are some other quotes from coach Nick Saban about him that didn’t get worked into the story. Saban was asked what the coaches saw in Robinson during the recruiting process.
“What we saw in him was a very big, athletic guy that had tremendous potential. A very good football player in high school. A very good basketball player, an all-around athlete. We didn’t know how he would develop. We’re very pleased with the way he’s developed. I think he’s played better each and every week as he’s gained confidence in what’s expected of him and what his assignments are and plays faster.”
“He’s a big, powerful guy who does a really good job of pushing the pocket in the middle, and that’s something that we really need. He’s fit a need for us, and he’s done a nice job of working hard to improve. I think some of the older players on the team have enhanced his development with their leadership and the example that they’ve set and how they’ve sort of adopted him and helped him to continue to improve.”
The second note of the notebook is about another true freshman, running back Altee Tenpenny, and how he has come on. The following is what Saban said about him, and all freshmen in general.
“I just think that with a lot of the freshmen, they have high expectations for what they want to accomplish. But I think the realization of what they need to do to improve every day to become complete players at their position is really critical to their development. I also think as with most freshmen who are playing, they have a lot to learn. The more experience they get, obviously the better opportunity they’ll have to do that and to improve and get better.”
