Daily Bama Blog correspondent Brett Hudson, like he did for the BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, will count you down to the beginning of spring practice with another series. Each day, Brett will break down a different position group going into spring practice until the beginning of practice on March 16. Here is the schedule.
March 7th: Quarterbacks (click here to read it)
March 8th: Running backs (click here to read it)
March 9th: Wide receivers (click here to read it)
Sunday: Tight ends/H-Backs (click here to read it)
Monday: Offensive Line (click here to read it)
Yesterday: Defensive Line (click here to read it)
Today: Linebackers/Pro Day (click here for the linebackers preview and click here for the Hub of Pro Day coverage)
Tomorrow: Cornerbacks
Friday: Safeties
Saturday: Opening day of spring practice

The practice videos throughout the years showcase different players going through different drills from year-to-year, even being led by different position coaches. But there is always on constant.

Nick Saban. And not just his presence, but where exactly he is: with the cornerbacks.

Saban’s hands-on approach with the Crimson Tide cornerbacks has produced NFL Draft talent such as Dre Kirkpatrick and DeQuan Menzie, all being replaced in-stride. Alabama has to do the same for 2013 after losing Dee Milliner to what could be a Top 5 pick.

The Tide has Deion Belue returning for his second season of starting at the cornerback position in as many seasons after transferring to Alabama from Northeast Mississippi Community College. Belue intercepted two passes, broke up seven and defended another nine last season.

Geno Smith began to rise as his freshman season carried on, at one point prompting Saban to say, “the light came on,” for him. Smith broke up two passes and defended two more in his limited playing time in 2012, but it was enough to make him a favorite for the 2013 season.

Smith would have been competing with John Fulton, the South Carolina native, had he not suffered a toe injury in the loss to Texas A&M and is out indefinitely for spring practice. Saban has not addressed whether or not he wil practice in spring, but it seems unlikely that Fulton will be ready for the first one on Saturday.

Redshirt sophomores Bradley Sylve and Jabriel Washington will also compete in the spring.

The Tide has four defensive backs coming in as a part of the 2013 recruiting class, all of whom could land at cornerback. Jonathan Cook, from Spanish Fort, Ala., played cornerback in high school and will likely stay at the position. New Jersey product Anthony Averett, listed as an athlete out of high school, has said that Saban plans to try him out as a cornerback.

ArDarius Stewart and Maurice Smith will also enter the program in the fall with their first positions in the defensive backfield.

Breakdown: Two seniors (Belue, Fulton), two redshirt sophomores (Sylve, Washington), one true sophomore (G. Smith), four true freshmen (none in spring training: Cook, Averett, Stewart, M. Smith).

Prediction: Belue is a sure thing as a starter, and G. Smith has a great opportunity to separate himself as the other in Fulton’s absence. Sylve and Washington have the opportunity to compete for the nickelback spot, but so do the incoming freshmen. G. Smith did just that last year: found an opportunity as the nickelback and did not fall back after his initial tryout.

Trio of Tide commitments help state win Alabama-Mississippi game

Crimson Tide commitment Jonathan Cook intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic on Saturday in Montgomery.

Cook, a Spanish Fort High standout, made his play in the second quarter of Alabama’s 21-16 win over Mississippi. With Mississippi facing second-and-goal from the Alabama 2, Cook snatched a Parker Adamson pass in the end zone and ran it back to the Mississippi 43. It set up a field goal, giving Alabama a 6-0 lead.

Cook also broke up two passes and made a tackle for a 4-yard loss. Alabama commitment Darius Paige, a defensive tackle from Foley High, made one tackle and was credited with one quarterback hurry. Tide commitment ArDarius Stewart of Fultondale High returned two punts for a total of 5 yards and broke up a pass.

Commit update: Derrick Henry, ArDarius Stewart, Leon Brown

Alabama commitment Derrick Henry was off Friday night, as Yulee (Fla.) High had a bye week as he chases the national career rushing yards record. Henry needs 512 yards to take over as the country’s top all-time rusher.

Yulee (6-3) will complete its regular season Friday at Hamilton County. After that, Yulee will participate in the Class 4A state playoffs in Florida’s eight-classification system.

Henry, who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, has 2,855 yards this season in nine games. Different people are giving different figures, but we’ve tried to go with figures published by the Florida Times-Union, which is based in Jacksonville, Fla., and is Yulee’s hometown newspaper.

Rival Kevin Taylor of Glades Day High of Belle Glade, Fla., had 201 yards Monday night in his most recent game. Glades Day also was off this week but will play again Friday night at home against South Fork.

The all-time list
1, Ken Hall, Sugar Land (Texas), 1950-53, 11,232
2, Mike Hart, Onondaga (Nedrow, N.Y.), 2000-03, 11,045
3, Kevin Parks Jr., West Roan (Mt. Ulla, N.C.), 2006-09, 10,895
4, Johnathan Gray, Aledo (Texas), 2008-11, 10,889
5, Derrick Henry, Yulee (Fla.), 2009-12, 10,721
6, Traylon Shead, Cayuga (Texas), 2006-09, 10,298
7, Toney Baker, Ragsdale (Jamestown, N.C.), 2001-04, 10,241
8, Kevin Taylor, Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.), 2009-12, 9,874
9, Terrance Wilkes, Wadley (Ala.), 2003-06, 9,668
10, Toby Gerhart, Norco (Calif.), 2002-05, 9,662

The national record book counts only the ninth through 12th grades, so Taylor has more overall yards than Henry because he played varsity as an eighth grader. Taylor has 11,418, including his eighth-grade numbers.

Some other bits and pieces about Tide recruits:

–Offensive tackle Leon Brown has helped Asa Community College of Brooklyn, N.Y., post an 8-0 record. The Avengers have scored at least 61 points in five games. They were to play Saturday at Louisburg (N.C.), but the game was canceled because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy. They’ll complete their regular season at home Nov. 10 against Nassau Community College.

–Fultondale beat Parrish as athlete Ardarius Stewart had 123 rushing yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns. He also completed 4 of 6 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. The previous week, he rushed for five touchdowns and returned a kickoff 80 yards for a sixth. For his career, he has 128 touchdowns. According to AHSAA.com, that would rank third in the state’s history, behind Wilkes (160) and Alexandria’s Mac Campbell (153 in 1993-97).

Altee Tenpenny had 160 rushing yards on 20 carries with a touchdown as North Little Rock beat Little Rock Central 42-14 on Thursday night. For entertainment value, here is a short video of an incomplete pass in the end zone that was ruled a touchdown for Little Rock Central — and we’re not talking about a pass that was bobbled slightly or caught just barely out of bounds. This officiating call is just plain bad.

Alabama commitment enjoys big opening game

Alabama commitment ArDarius Stewart accounted for five touchdowns Thursday night as he led Fultondale to a 64-26 win over Montevallo.

According to al.com, the quarterback ran for 156 yards on six carries and completed 8 of 10 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for two touchdowns. In addition, he returned a punt 66 yards and played defense for a busy night.

Interesting note about the game: The opposing coach was Andrew Zow, a former Alabama quarterback who was making his coaching debut with the team.
