Update on four ex-Alabama football players and their trials

The Associated Press caught up with the four former Alabama football players – Tyler Hayes, Eddie Williams, Brent Calloway and D.J. Pettway – who were arrested in connection with on-campus robberies. Here is the report.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Four former Alabama football players arrested after two on-campus robberies are set to have their cases presented to a Tuscaloosa County grand jury.

Safety Eddie Williams, linebacker Dennis Pettway and running back/H-back Brent Calloway all waived their rights to a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday before Tuscaloosa District Court Judge James C. Guin. Linebacker Tyler Hayes’ case was automatically sent to a grand jury on Monday.

The players were dismissed from school following a judicial review.

Williams, Pettway and Hayes are charged with two counts of second-degree robbery after two students were attacked in separate robberies on Feb. 11. Williams and Calloway are both charged with using a stolen debit card.

Williams and Calloway – both 20 – and 18-year-old Pettway are seeking youthful offender status.

Hayes, 18, and Williams confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back. Williams said Pettway and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams and Calloway both admitted to using a stolen campus debit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory, the documents said.

Countdown to Spring Football: Tight Ends/H-Backs Breakdown

Daily Bama Blog correspondent Brett Hudson, like he did for the BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, will count you down to the beginning of spring practice with another series. Each day, Brett will break down a different position group going into spring practice until the beginning of practice on March 16. Here is the schedule.
Today: Quarterbacks (click here to read it)
Tomorrow: Running backs (click here to read it)
Saturday: Wide receivers (click here to read it)
Sunday: Tight ends/H-Backs
Monday: Offensive Line
Tuesday: Defensive Line
Wednesday: Linebackers/Pro Day
March 14: Cornerbacks
March 15: Safeties
March 16: Opening day of spring practice

Since the beginning of the Jim McElwain era in Tuscaloosa, the tight end and the H-Back have been staples of the Crimson Tide offense. Brad Smelley had more receiving yards than all but Marquise Maze on the 2011 national championship team.

Alabama has to find another threat at the position after losing both Michael Williams and Kelly Johnson after the 2012 BCS National Championship Game. Williams caught 24 passes, fourth on the team, for 183 yards and four touchdowns while Johnson added five catches for 39 yards.

However, Alabama will have two juniors and a redshirt sophomore battling for the two spots in spring training. Brian Vogler played in all 14 games, mostly using his 6-foot-7, 258 lbs frame to run block, but did catch two passes for 21 yards.

Harrison Jones, the younger brother of former offensive lineman Barrett and older brother of upcoming freshman linebacker Walker, played in 10 games as a sophomore but did not catch a pass. Neither did Malcolm Faciane, the redshirt sophomore in the group, who played in seven games this season.

The Tide has one freshman already on campus at this position, former Autauga Academy standout O.J. Howard. Howard (freshman year highlights), 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, said he would not mind playing both tight end and H-Back.

Breakdown: Two juniors (Jones and Vogler), one redshirt sophomore (Faciane) and one true freshman (Howard), plus walk-ons.

Prediction: The frames on both Vogler and Howard make them appealing options, but Jones has the family smarts that make him a viable option with a year in the new system under his belt. It is tough to go wrong with any option, so this spring could see the tight end/H-Back battles be the most hotly-contested on the offensive side of the ball.

In the end, Howard will certainly get his fair share of chances, and seeing him in a rotation with Vogler and Jones would not be surprising.

Four arrested players no longer with Alabama football team, other news

Numerous reports have confirmed that the four players arrested in connection with two robberies on campus: Tyler Hayes, Eddie Williams, Brent Calloway and D.J. Pettway, are “no longer associated with the team.”

The four were indefinitely suspended from the team after their arrests and were later barred from campus before being kicked off the team, according to Wednesday’s reports.

The University of Alabama released a statement on the matter Wednesday afternoon.

“UA’s judicial review has been completed. The four students involved in the robberies on campus are no longer enrolled in UA,” the statement noted.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said the players’ actions did not “reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization reflect.”

“Their actions do not reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization to reflect,” Saban said. “It’s obviously very disappointing and unacceptable what happened.”

The wide receiving corps has also taken a hit, according to the same reports. Marvin Shinn has decided to forego offseason workouts and is expected to transfer. Shinn caught six passes for 42 yards in 2012, two for 14 yards in the BCS National Championship Game.

Another Mobile area product, wide receiver Danny Woodson Jr., has been suspended for a violation of team rules and will not participate in spring practice. Woodson Jr., the son of former Alabama quarterback Danny Sr., caught one pass for nine yards in the 2012 season.

Finally, in the wide receiving corps, Kevin Norwood, Alabama’s No. 2 wide receiver behind Amari Cooper last season, has been held out of offseason workouts with a toe injury and has an uncertain status for spirng practice. Norwood caught 29 passes for 461 yards last season. Cornerback John Fulton is in a similar situation after injuring his toe in the Texas A&M loss and having surgery on it.

TimesDaily complete report on 4 arrested UA football players

With some help from Daily Bama Blog contributor Brett Hudson and the Associated Press, Tom Smith with the TimesDaily in Florence wrote a story for the Wednesday print edition. Here is his work.

TUSCALOOSA — Former Russellville standout Brent Calloway was suspended from the Alabama football team today after being charged a day earlier with fraudulent use of a debit/credit card. Three of his teammates were also suspended after being charged with knocking students unconscious and stealing their wallets.

Calloway, 20, was accused of using one victim’s university action card/debit card and knowing it was stolen, according to a deposition filed in Tuscaloosa County District Court.

The deposition (which can be seen here) said Calloway admitted using the card for numerous purchases from the vending machine on the first floor of Bryant Hall. Calloway, a running back, was released on $5,000 bail.

The other football players arrested Monday:

– Defensive back Eddie Williams was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and also fraudulent use of a credit/debit card. He was released on $65,000 bail.
– Linebacker Tyler Hayes was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Defensive lineman Dennis “D.J.” Pettway was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Hayes, 18, and Williams, 20, confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back early Monday morning, according to court documents.

Williams said Pettway, 20, and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams also admitted to using a stolen credit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people,” football coach Nick Saban said in a statement released this afternoon. “The university and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

All four players were backups last season for Alabama, which has won two straight national titles and three of the past four. Williams didn’t play in 2012. But he was one of the nation’s top prospects the previous year and moved from receiver to safety.

The first student reported having his Apple Macbook Pro stolen from his backpack. Both sustained mild concussions, cuts on the face and heavy swelling, and had their wallets taken, according to documents.

The first incident occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the 800 block of Campus Drive and the second at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 200 block of Seventh Avenue, the school said today in a release.

University police posted an advisory Monday saying two students reported being robbed after they were approached by two men who asked for a light for a cigarette.

Athletics Director Mal Moore issued the following statement: “This is a very serious matter and we are very disappointed in the actions that have resulted in the charges against these student-athletes. In this type of situation, the athletics department works in conjunction with the university. We will have more to say at the appropriate time.”

Police also said Williams had been arrested on a charge of carrying a pistol without a permit a day before his Monday arrest. Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Brent Blankley said in a news release that a clerk at a gas station called police early Sunday, telling officers that Williams threatened that he had something in his trunk after a fight about paying for gas.

Officers who pulled over Williams found a pistol in his pants pocket, the release said. In that case, he was released on $500 bail.

Jail records did not show whether any of the players had an attorney.

This is the second arrest for Calloway since he signed a scholarship with the Crimson Tide in 2011.

He was arrested on marijuana possession charges in October 2012 as a passenger in a vehicle stopped on campus.

A high school All-American at Russellville and four-star recruit, Calloway, along with the other three players, all were backup players on the 2012 National Championship team.

As a senior at Russellville, Calloway ran for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns while also starring at linebacker.

He made headlines in January 2011 after switching his long-standing commitment from Alabama to Auburn. Another change of heart led him to sign with the Tide in February 2011.

Saban in statement: 4 arrested are suspended indefinitely

After Director of Media Relation Cathy Andreen and athletic director Mal Moore released statements on Tuesday morning, head coach Nick Saban released his Tuesday afternoon.

In the statement, Saban officially suspends the four players arrested Monday night: Brent Calloway, Eddie Williams, D.J. Pettway and Tyler Hayes.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

Thoughts from Monday’s practice

Who throws the most interceptions in Alabama’s practice? It’s head coach Nick Saban, left, who tosses passes for his defensive backs to pick off during drills.

Alabama went through today’s workout in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, and as Nick Saban promised earier in the day, all the injured players were on the field.

Cornerback Deion Belue (shoulder) was back in a regular jersey instead of the black non-contact one he wore last week. He looked fine and was moving well in the 10-minute viewing period we had.

Redshirt freshman Brent Calloway (unspecified injury) worked with the running backs. The 6-foot-1, 217-pound Calloway had practiced with the tight ends and H-backs since spring. Last fall, however, he was with the running backs, so today’s switch wasn’t out of the blue. Because of season-ending knee injuries to Jalston Fowler and Dee Hart, Alabama has only three running backs on scholarship (Eddie Lacy, Kenyan Drake and T.J. Yeldon) and need some help at the position.

Wide receiver Kevin Norwood still is struggling with his lower leg injury. He practiced, but couldn’t do everything. Below, I’ve posted two videos that will help you understand what I mean. He ran a route in the first video and looked fine. But in the second, he didn’t and instead walked slowly down to the other end, joining the other receivers.

Alabama needs Norwood, who is the Tide’s most complete receiver in terms of size, power and speed. Amari Cooper certainly has shined, but it’s hard for any true freshman not named Julio Jones to carry the load.

Saban: Everybody will practice today

The off-week helped Alabama get some of its players healthy as it prepares for a stretch of seven regular-season games in seven weeks.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban said today every will practice this afternoon.

That includes cornerback Deion Belue, who sat out all drills last week with a shoulder injury and instead rode an exercise bike. Wide receiver Kevin Norwood (lower leg injury) has dressed out and hasn’t been dressed in a black non-contact jersey, but for the past couple of weeks, he hasn’t worked out. H-back/running back Brent Calloway missed sat out some drills last week with an undisclosed ailment.

“Deion Belue’s going to practice,” Saban said. “We’re going to limit his contact for a few more days but he can practice today.

“Kevin Norwood can practice today. Callaway can practice today. Everybody that didn’t practice last week can practice today.”

Thoughts on Wednesday’s practice, injuries (video)

Alabama worked out in full pads today, and we saw about what we expected to see, in regards to injured players and the fallout.

–Tide cornerback Deion Belue (right shoulder) wore a black non-contact jersey and was riding a stationary bike. He couldn’t even lift his right arm up to grab the handle bars, but Alabama coach Nick Saban is hopeful he can return to practice next week.

–Noseguard Brandon Ivory (ankle) was back at practice.

–Defensive end Ed Stinson worked out with the lineman as usual. He went down late in Saturday’s win over Ole Miss with an apparent case of cramps and Saban didn’t mention him in the injury report.

–Brent Calloway was with the H-backs. With Alabama down to three running backs on scholarship, Saban said Monday it might be possible for Calloway to move to running back, which is where he practiced last season. Blake Sims, another running back from a year ago, worked at quarterback.

–Alabama has lost five players to season-ending injuries, and all of them were expected to play some kind of important role this year. Safety Jarrick Williams (knee) and receiver Chris Black (shoulder) were expected to be part of the two-deep depth chart.

Williams also was an important special teams member. Black was expected to help at receiver, even though he is a true freshman. He enrolled early, went through spring practice and caught three passes for 61 yards and a touchdown in the spring game.

Jalston Fowler (knee) was the third-team running back behind starter Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon, but Fowler also played special teams and spent some time at fullback and H-back.

Running back/kick returner Dee Hart (knee) had moved up to first team as a punt returner and did well against Ole Miss — two returns for 18 yards. DeAndrew White (knee) was one of Alabama’s top five receivers.

We have two short videos for you. The first is of the defensive linemen hitting a blocking sled. Ivory (62) is in the middle of the second group. Stinson (49) joins the drill a little late, and you can see him walking by before taking his place.

In the second video, you can see Belue riding the stationary bike. That’s former All-SEC defensive end Kindal Morehead with him. Morehead played six years in the NFL with Carolina and Atlanta and is a Tide graduate assistant coach.

A look back: Brent Calloway at running back (video)

With Jalston Fowler and Dee Hart out for the year with knee injuries, possible help for the running back rotation could come from Brent Calloway, who has worked at H-back since the spring.

Calloway, a redshirt freshman, has played in three games this year, catching one pass for minus-2 yards.

At Russellville, he was the state’s Class 5A Back of the Year as a senior in 2010. He rushed for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns.

He spent the fall of 2011 at running back, and here is some video of him working at the position at the time. It was taken by former Daily Bama Blog editor Michael Casagrande, who was extremely good with the camera:

Thoughts from Thursday’s practice

Nick Saban allowed reporters through the gates for two periods of today’s Alabama football practice. That’s a total of fewer than 20 minutes that we’re watching. As always, we appreciate the consideration, but realize that any observations I give are based on that small window.

I spent much of my time watching the receivers and tight ends and a little bit of the defensive backs, mostly to watch Saban teach his group. The defensive backs get the lion’s share of his attention during individual position drills.

–Wide receiver DeAndew White can make some amazing catches at times. Last night, I saw him make a one-handed grab of a rare AJ McCarron mis-fire. Saban always preaches consistency, and if White finds that, he’ll be something special. Also, he’s only a sophomore, so he has time.

–True freshman Eddie Williams and redshirt freshman Marvin Shinn made some nice grabs as we watched.

–Michael Williams will be Alabama’s starting tight end, and at 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds, he provides a nice, big target who also can block. But as far as the other tight end spot, which often lines up in the backfield as an H-back, Harrison Jones and Brent Calloway are doing some good things.

–It must be a mixed blessing to be a defensive back at Alabama. Unlike the other positions, you’ve got the head coach over your shoulder even during the most mundane drills. That’s the bad part. Here’s the good part: Unlike the other positions, you’ve got the head coach over your shoulder even during the most mundane drills. Consider that three of last year’s starting defensive backs were taken in the NFL draft, you have to think that any recruit who wants to play professionally in the secondary is thinking about Saban’s impact.

Here is some more practice video. It’s a small taste of Saban working with his defensive backs. If you want to criticize the person shooting it, I certainly don’t blame you. (I’m the one who shot it.):

Addressing the latest Brent Calloway rumor

As a journalist, just mentioning the word rumor makes my skin crawl. But the web is crawling with untruths involving Alabama incoming freshman Brent Calloway.

Here’s the real deal, according to someone very close to the situation: There’s nothing to it. Calloway hasn’t started classes yet. That doesn’t happen until July, so the conspiracy theories are bunk.

Check out the Twitter feed of TimesDaily reporter Bryan App for more.

I hope we don’t have to do this again.
