Courtney Upshaw flips car in commercial

Former Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw, now a rookie with the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl, made a commercial a few months ago for Gamma Labs PTF in which he flips a car. It’s a cool ad and worth the 31 seconds it will take to watch it.

The company has posted that Upshaw flips the car as part of his workout regimen with the help of Gamma Labs PTF.

Just one question: Is flipping cars part of “The Process” Upshaw learned at Alabama from Nick Saban?

The Baltimore Sun has written a feature story about how Ravens rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw is playing in the Super Bowl a year after helping Alabama win a national title.

“Roll Tide,” he told the newspaper, grinning, when asked last week about playing for another championship. “Nah, it’s a great feeling, man, to have the opportunity — especially as a rookie — to be playing for the Super Bowl. I won those championships in college. Now I’m in the pros, and I’m looking forward to trying to win the Super Bowl.”

Tide in the NFL: Big days for Johnson, Richardson, Ingram

Arizona safety Rashad Johnson, a fourth-year NFL player out of Alabama, intercepted a Matt Ryan pass on the first play of the Cardinals’ 23-19 loss to Atlanta.

Johnson returned it 34 yards to the Arizona 9, and the Cardinals eventually scored the game’s first touchdown. It marked Johnson’s second career interception, with his first coming in 2010 against Minnesota. He also had a tackle Sunday and a fumble recovery, although the Cardinals didn’t turn that turnover into points.

For the Falcons, wide receiver Julio Jones caught three passes for 33 yards.

Tide in the NFL: Upshaw loses weight, Trent’s ribs bother him

Former Alabama running back Trent Richardson is off to a slow start in his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, and the team is discussing shutting him down until his ribs heal.

A possibility would be sitting him through two games and a bye week, then letting him return Nov. 18 against Dallas. Richardson was benched midway through Sunday’s loss to the Colts.

“You just watch him, watch him practice, see where he’s at physically and if he’s ready to play, he’ll play,” Shurmur told the Plain Dealer of Cleveland. “If we see that this is bothering him to the point where he can’t perform, then we’ll make those decisions as we go.”

Meanwhile, former Alabama teammate Courtney Upshaw no longer is digging into his wallet to pay the Baltimore Ravens. The team has fined him since the training camp for being overweight.

He now is down to his prescribed weight of 270 pounds, so the fines have stopped.

“I didn’t even look at the fines,” Upshaw told the Baltimore Sun. “I just knew they were taking my money. That started getting me down.”

Tide in the NFL: Trent sets Browns rookie mark

Trent Richardson scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter of the Cleveland Browns’ 41-27 loss Sunday to the New York Giants, setting a team record in the process.

Richardson has scored a rushing touchdown in four straight games now, and no rookie in franchise history can match that, not even Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who led the NFL in rushing (942 yards) and rushing touchdowns (nine) during his rookie season in 1957.

This gives Richardson five touchdowns for the season. He entered today’s game tied for second in the NFL in touchdowns. As has happened often this season, the Browns trailed the whole second half and threw a lot in an attempt to catch up. As a result, Richardson carried the ball only 17 times for 81 yards, with 67 of those yards coming before intermission. He gained 47 receiving yards on five catches.

–Saints safety Roman Harper had a big game in New Orleans’ 31-24 win over San Diego. He had six tackles, including one for a loss, and three passes defended. In addition, he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned in 41 yards to set up a field goal.

New Orleans running back Mark Ingram carried five times for 16 yards. For San Diego, linebacker Jarret Johnson had three stops, including one for loss.

–For this afternoon’s Denver-New England game, the Patriots declared injured linebacker Dont’a Hightower (hamstring) inactive. New England won 31-21.

–Buffalo defensive lineman Marcell Dareus recovered a fumble and made two tackles, while fellow defensive lineman Mark Anderson added three stops. The Bills still lost 45-3 to San Francisco.

–Wide receiver Julio Jones caught 10 passes for 94 yards and had one rushing attempt for a yard as the Falcons beat Washington 24-17. Jones caught an 18-yard touchdown pass early in the final period. He also made a 29-yard reception to put the Falcons in position for the winning touchdown.

–Baltimore beat Kansas City 9-6. The Ravens’ Courtney Upshaw had two tackles and a fumble recovery, while teammate Terrence Cody had a pair of stops. The Chiefs’ Javier Arenas has a tackle and four punt returns for 8 yards.

–Defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry had a tackle in Cincinnati’s 17-13 loss to Miami.

–Linebacker DeMeco Ryans made a season-high 12 tackles as Philadelphia lost to Pittsburgh 16-14.

–In Thursday’s game, Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson had a pair of tackles as Arizona fell to St. Louis 17-3.

–Oakland (Rolando McClain) and Tampa Bay (Mark Barron) had a bye week. On Monday night, Houston (Kareem Jackson and Antoine Caldwell) will face the New York Jets (Greg McElroy).

Thursday in the NFL: Tide vs. Tide

Courtney Upshaw and Terrence Cody have bragging rights over former Alabama teammate Trent Richardson.

Upshaw and Cody helped their Baltimore Ravens to a 23-16 win over Richardson’s Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, in a game that matched Tide vs. Tide.

In addition to the three players, former Alabama All-America split end Ozzie Newsome is the Ravens’ general manager. Richardson, Cody and Upshaw were key members of the Tide’s 2009 national championship team, while Richardson and Upshaw were All-Americans on the 2011 title-winning squad.

Richardson finished with 47 rushing yards on 14 carries with a touchdown on a 1-yard run. He also has gained 57 yards on four catches. He didn’t touch the ball in the last 12 minutes. Upshaw had three tackles, while Cody had two.

On one first-quarter play, Richardson ran for 3 yards before Upshaw and Cody combined to bring him down.

Earlier in the evening, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked on his weekly radio show which team he wanted to see win. Saban pointed out he is a former assistant coach for the Browns (1991-94) and is friends with Newsome. He also added that he wants to see his former players do well.

“I can’t pick a team for you,” Saban said. “I do like the Ravens, but I also like the Browns.”

Trent gets a chance to face ‘Uncle Ray’

Cleveland Browns rookie running back Trent Richardson will get a chance to face NFL All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis on Thursday. This is the same Ray Lewis that Richardson referred to as “Uncle Ray” during the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

“It’s a mind-set thing with me,” Richardson said at the combine, according to the Plain Dealer. “I’m not saying that Ray Lewis ain’t going to take me out, because when it comes down to it we’re going to have to see each other in the hole. And I love Uncle Ray to death and he’s going to bring me all the contact he can and beat me up in the hole, but why would you stand down in front of that?”

The Plain Dealer asked Richardson about those comments this week, now that the Browns are playing the Ravens.

“Not to be cocky or talking mess, but if you’re an athlete or you’re a competitor, why would you stand down for anybody?” Richardson said to the Plain Dealer. “I know Ray Lewis is going to come at me and I’m going to come right back at him. That’s just football. He knows what football’s about and I know what football’s about, we’ve been playing it for years. Both of us are going to give all we can.”

Richardson likely is just as interested in a couple of other defensive players for the Ravens: noseguard Terrence Cody and linebacker Courtney Upshaw. All three were key members of Alabama’s 2009 national championship team. Richardson and Upshaw played on the 2011 national-title winners.

“He’s a phenomenal back,” Upshaw told CBSsports.com. “He definitely fits their running style. From watching film and playing with him, he’s a hard runner. You just have to gang tackle him. He’ll look to get one or two yards if nothing’s there so you have to get to him.”

Upshaw told the website he wasn’t allowed to hit Richardson in practice because Alabama needed players fresh for the game.

“It’s a different story now,” Upshaw said. “It’s going to be a good game and a good back to go against.”

Tide in the NFL: Ingram scores, Dareus has a sack

The Buffalo Bills scored a 35-17 win over Kansas City today as the team paid tribute to former Alabama player Marcell Dareus.

Dareus, a second-year defensive tackle, played after traveling to Birmingham this past week to mourn the death of his brother. Dareus’ younger brother, Simeon Gilmore, was one of three people killed during a burglary in Pelham on Sunday.

“He’s going through a rough time, but he felt responsibilities here,” Kyle Williams told reporters, according to The Associated Press. “He always picks our team up and we’re glad that he’s back.”

Dareus played with a shoulder injury, but still had two tackles, a sack and two stops behind the line. Another former Alabama defensive lineman, Mark Anderson, had three tackles for the Bills, including one behind the line.

“The team rallied up around me. This is my release from whatever is going on in the outside world,” Dareus told reporters. “I focused in on the football field and took everything else out of my head.”

For Kansas City, ex-Crimson Tide defensive back Javier Arenas had three tackles, returned three punts for 40 yards and ran back two kickoffs for 40 yards.

They weren’t the only former Alabama standouts to shine today. New Orleans lost 35-27 to Carolina but Mark Ingram rushed for 53 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Saints defensive back Roman Harper of Alabama had three tackles.

Arizona beat New England 20-18 as safety Rashad Johnson had a tackle. For the Patriots, linebacker Dont’a Hightower managed five stops, including one behind the line.

Tampa Bay safety Mark Barron had 10 tackles and defended two passes, but the Bucs fell 41-34 to the New York Giants.

Philadelphia beat Baltimore as middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans had a big day. He made seven tackles, one sack for a 13-yard loss and two stops behind the line. In addition, he intercepted a pass, although he didn’t gain any yards on the return. Still, it set up a touchdown.

For the Ravens, linebacker Courtney Upshaw had six tackles, including one behind the line.

Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain had two tackles in Oakland’s 35-13 loss to Miami.

Chargers fullback Le’Ron McClain rushed for 19 yards on two carries as San Diego beat Tennessee 38-10. Also for the Chargers, linebacker Jarret Johnson had a tackle.

Making his debut for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw of Alabama assisted on a sack Monday night.

In the fourth quarter of the Ravens’ 44-13 win over Cincinnati, Upshaw and defensive Pernell McPhee brought down Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton for a 12-yard loss on fourth-and-15.

Upshaw finished with four tackles. Ravens noseguard Terrence Cody of Alabama made a tackle in the win.

For the Bengals, Andre Smith played offensive tackle. Rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (knee) did not play.

The San Diego Chargers beat Oakland 22-14, as fullback Le’Ron McClain caught four passes for 15. Linebacker Jarret Johnson added five tackles. For the Raiders, linebacker Rolando McClain had five tackles.

Tiders in the NFL on Thursday: Upshaw shines

Former Alabama standout Courtney Upshaw recorded his first sack of the preseason as the Baltimore Ravens blew out the Jacksonville Jaguars 48-17.

After a slow start to the preseason that caused some concern in Baltimore, Upshaw didn’t start Thursday night. But he did get extended playing time with the first unit and had two tackles, including a second-half sack of Jacksonville’s Chad Henne for a 7-yard loss.

Two other former Alabama players with the Ravens had one tackle each: Chavis Williams and Terrence Cody.

In Cincinnati’s 27-13 loss to Green Bay, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick didn’t play because of an injured left knee. He returned to practice this week, but didn’t get a chance to make his professional debut Thursday.

NFL news on some former Tiders

Here are some links with news of five former Alabama players in the NFL:

DeMeco Ryans, Philadelphia Eagles

Marquis Johnson, New Orleans Saints

Courtney Upshaw, Terrence Cody, Baltimore Ravens.

–In addition, Greg McElroy is mentioned toward the end of an ESPN.com blog about the New York Jets, discussing Sunday’s practice: “This might have been QB Greg McElroy’s best practice of camp. He hit WR Wes Kemp on a 47-yard post route (beautiful throw) and he showed good arm strength on a nice sideline completion to [Bilal] Powell, who beat LB Demario Davis.”

Upshaw closer to return from Ravens

After spraining his right shoulder July 28, ex-Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw hasn’t practiced for the Baltimore Ravens.

However, Upshaw told the Baltimore Sun for a story that he is getting close to returning.

“Honestly, there really was no pain, but the second play I went to try to extend it — being at the position I’m at, I have to use my hands and try to be powerful and I really could not do it,” he told the newspaper. “It flared up as I was out for the rest of the practice. And it was just sore. Right now, it’s still sore and it’s still a little stiff. We’re just trying to work on getting that out.”

Upshaw was taken in the second round of this past spring’s NFL draft.

Maybe the most interesting part of the Baltimore Sun story is the first reader comment at the bottom. In Upshaw’s interview with the Baltimore Sun, he clearly was trying to sound upbeat about seeing a decent crowd show up for a Ravens practice. However, the first reader to comment treated Upshaw as if he comes from Hicksville and hasn’t seen a big crowd at a football game ever. As Alabama fans know, Upshaw was accustomed to playing in front of 100,000 in college, including a nearly full stadium just for a spring game. Not exactly small-time for a football game.

Upshaw strikes fear in practice

After three weeks of preseason practices, Alabama players are sick of seeing teammates on the other side of the line.

Tide offensive players are particularly fed up with having to block pass-rushing linebacker Courtney Upshaw. Here’s what I wrote for print today.

TUSCALOOSA — There’s a sight no Alabama blocker hopes to see any given practice afternoon.

A speeding No. 41 in crimson is cringe-worthy at best. After three weeks of practicing, Crimson Tide offensive players are just about sick of getting in Courtney Upshaw’s way.

Even the biggest and strongest blockers look forward to the day Alabama’s pass-rushing outside linebacker finds someone else to hit.

That includes running back Trent Richardson, who actively seeks contact in most situations.

“It’s not pretty,” Richardson said. “He’s one of the strongest and biggest guys you’ll ever find on a football field, and he’s pretty fast, too. When I look at him and know he’s blitzing, I’m like, ‘Maaaaannn!’ “
