TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Four former Alabama football players arrested after two on-campus robberies are set to have their cases presented to a Tuscaloosa County grand jury.

Safety Eddie Williams, linebacker Dennis Pettway and running back/H-back Brent Calloway all waived their rights to a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday before Tuscaloosa District Court Judge James C. Guin. Linebacker Tyler Hayes’ case was automatically sent to a grand jury on Monday.

The players were dismissed from school following a judicial review.

Williams, Pettway and Hayes are charged with two counts of second-degree robbery after two students were attacked in separate robberies on Feb. 11. Williams and Calloway are both charged with using a stolen debit card.

Williams and Calloway – both 20 – and 18-year-old Pettway are seeking youthful offender status.

Hayes, 18, and Williams confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back. Williams said Pettway and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams and Calloway both admitted to using a stolen campus debit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory, the documents said.

Countdown to Spring Football: Defensive Line Breakdown

Daily Bama Blog correspondent Brett Hudson, like he did for the BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, will count you down to the beginning of spring practice with another series. Each day, Brett will break down a different position group going into spring practice until the beginning of practice on March 16. Here is the schedule.
March 7th: Quarterbacks (click here to read it)
March 8th: Running backs (click here to read it)
March 9th: Wide receivers (click here to read it)
Sunday: Tight ends/H-Backs (click here to read it)
Yesterday: Offensive Line (click here to read it)
Today: Defensive Line
Tomorrow: Linebackers/Pro Day
Thursday: Cornerbacks
Friday: Safeties
Saturday: Opening day of spring practice

The case can be made, and effectively, at that, that Alabama has most of its work to do as it moves from 2012 to 2013 in the trenches. Not only does the Crimson Tide have to replace starters Jesse Williams and Damion Square, but also a key piece in the rotation for the other end spot, Quinton Dial.

Alabama’s recent use of junior college players, such as Williams and Dial, has put the Tide in a bind for 2013, but it does have a starter for 2012 returning in Ed Stinson. Stinson led the team in tackles for a loss for the majority of the season before a late push from linebacker Adrian Hubbard unseated him. Stinson still finished the 2013 season with a career-best 29 tackles, 19 of them solo and 8.5 for a loss.

In the mix to fit into the projected four- or five-man rotation at defensive end include Dakota Ball, LaMichael Fanning (mostly known for this suplex tackle from last season), Korren Kirven, Dalvin Tomlinson and Wilson Love. The Tide is deep at the position despite losing D.J. Pettway after being dismissed from the team after his link to an on-campus burglary incident that also linked in Eddie Williams, Brent Calloway and Tyler Hayes.

At the defensive tackle spot, Brandon Ivory, before his injury troubles, played a key role as the backup to Williams in the defensive tackle spot and will surely have to battle with Jeoffrey Pagan for the spot, unless Pagan moves to end. Ivory played in 13 games last season, notching 22 tackles, seven solo and one for a loss, while Pagan played in all 14 and had 24 tackles, 10 solo and four for a loss. also contributing one sack.

Ball could also fit into this rotation, as could Darren Lake.

Alabama will have five freshmen coming into the program to help with depth, but none will be in school for spring practice. Jonathan Allen, Dee Liner and Tim Williams are projected to be defensive ends while Darius Paige and A’Shawn Robinson are expected be interior linemen.

Breakdown: Two seniors (Stinson and William Ming), two juniors (Ivory and Pagan), three sophomores (Fanning, Love, Lake), two redshirt freshmen (Kirven and Tomlinson), five true freshmen (Dee Liner, Tim Williams, Darius Paige, A’Shawn Robinson, Jonathan Allen).

Prediction: Ivory, Stinson and Pagan are sure to have their set spots in the rotation, more likely than not as something resembling a starting role, or at least comparable to it in terms of downs played per game.

From there, the rest of the rotation could very well be determined, or at least for the first weeks of the season, by the performance in spring practice. Alabama coach Nick Saban is known for having versatility in his defensive line personnel with regards to position plus having anywhere from a six-to-nine player rotation for his three defensive line spots, so many players, including the true freshmen coming in for preseason workouts, will have an opportunity.

Four arrested players no longer with Alabama football team, other news

Numerous reports have confirmed that the four players arrested in connection with two robberies on campus: Tyler Hayes, Eddie Williams, Brent Calloway and D.J. Pettway, are “no longer associated with the team.”

The four were indefinitely suspended from the team after their arrests and were later barred from campus before being kicked off the team, according to Wednesday’s reports.

The University of Alabama released a statement on the matter Wednesday afternoon.

“UA’s judicial review has been completed. The four students involved in the robberies on campus are no longer enrolled in UA,” the statement noted.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said the players’ actions did not “reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization reflect.”

“Their actions do not reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization to reflect,” Saban said. “It’s obviously very disappointing and unacceptable what happened.”

The wide receiving corps has also taken a hit, according to the same reports. Marvin Shinn has decided to forego offseason workouts and is expected to transfer. Shinn caught six passes for 42 yards in 2012, two for 14 yards in the BCS National Championship Game.

Another Mobile area product, wide receiver Danny Woodson Jr., has been suspended for a violation of team rules and will not participate in spring practice. Woodson Jr., the son of former Alabama quarterback Danny Sr., caught one pass for nine yards in the 2012 season.

Finally, in the wide receiving corps, Kevin Norwood, Alabama’s No. 2 wide receiver behind Amari Cooper last season, has been held out of offseason workouts with a toe injury and has an uncertain status for spirng practice. Norwood caught 29 passes for 461 yards last season. Cornerback John Fulton is in a similar situation after injuring his toe in the Texas A&M loss and having surgery on it.

TimesDaily complete report on 4 arrested UA football players

TUSCALOOSA — Former Russellville standout Brent Calloway was suspended from the Alabama football team today after being charged a day earlier with fraudulent use of a debit/credit card. Three of his teammates were also suspended after being charged with knocking students unconscious and stealing their wallets.

Calloway, 20, was accused of using one victim’s university action card/debit card and knowing it was stolen, according to a deposition filed in Tuscaloosa County District Court.

The deposition (which can be seen here) said Calloway admitted using the card for numerous purchases from the vending machine on the first floor of Bryant Hall. Calloway, a running back, was released on $5,000 bail.

The other football players arrested Monday:

– Defensive back Eddie Williams was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and also fraudulent use of a credit/debit card. He was released on $65,000 bail.
– Linebacker Tyler Hayes was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Defensive lineman Dennis “D.J.” Pettway was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Hayes, 18, and Williams, 20, confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back early Monday morning, according to court documents.

Williams said Pettway, 20, and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams also admitted to using a stolen credit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people,” football coach Nick Saban said in a statement released this afternoon. “The university and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

All four players were backups last season for Alabama, which has won two straight national titles and three of the past four. Williams didn’t play in 2012. But he was one of the nation’s top prospects the previous year and moved from receiver to safety.

The first student reported having his Apple Macbook Pro stolen from his backpack. Both sustained mild concussions, cuts on the face and heavy swelling, and had their wallets taken, according to documents.

The first incident occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the 800 block of Campus Drive and the second at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 200 block of Seventh Avenue, the school said today in a release.

University police posted an advisory Monday saying two students reported being robbed after they were approached by two men who asked for a light for a cigarette.

Athletics Director Mal Moore issued the following statement: “This is a very serious matter and we are very disappointed in the actions that have resulted in the charges against these student-athletes. In this type of situation, the athletics department works in conjunction with the university. We will have more to say at the appropriate time.”

Police also said Williams had been arrested on a charge of carrying a pistol without a permit a day before his Monday arrest. Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Brent Blankley said in a news release that a clerk at a gas station called police early Sunday, telling officers that Williams threatened that he had something in his trunk after a fight about paying for gas.

Officers who pulled over Williams found a pistol in his pants pocket, the release said. In that case, he was released on $500 bail.

Jail records did not show whether any of the players had an attorney.

This is the second arrest for Calloway since he signed a scholarship with the Crimson Tide in 2011.

He was arrested on marijuana possession charges in October 2012 as a passenger in a vehicle stopped on campus.

A high school All-American at Russellville and four-star recruit, Calloway, along with the other three players, all were backup players on the 2012 National Championship team.

As a senior at Russellville, Calloway ran for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns while also starring at linebacker.

He made headlines in January 2011 after switching his long-standing commitment from Alabama to Auburn. Another change of heart led him to sign with the Tide in February 2011.

Saban in statement: 4 arrested are suspended indefinitely

After Director of Media Relation Cathy Andreen and athletic director Mal Moore released statements on Tuesday morning, head coach Nick Saban released his Tuesday afternoon.

In the statement, Saban officially suspends the four players arrested Monday night: Brent Calloway, Eddie Williams, D.J. Pettway and Tyler Hayes.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

UA statements on Monday night arrests

At 11:14 am on Tuesday, the University of Alabama’s Director of Media Relations Cathy Andreen released the following statement.

“On Monday, Feb. 11, the University of Alabama Police Department received reports of two robberies, the first occurring at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the 800 block of Campus Drive and the second at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 200 block of 7th Avenue. Both victims reported that they were assaulted and their belongings were taken.

“UAPD’s investigation led to the identification of suspects in both incidents. The investigation resulted in the following arrests on the evening of Feb. 11:

  • Eddie Williams – charged with two counts of second degree robbery and fraudulent use of a credit/debit card
  • Tyler Hayes – charged with two counts of second degree robbery
  • Dennis Pettway – charged with two counts of second degree robbery
  • Brent Calloway – charged with fraudulent use of a credit/debit card”

Saban wants Pettway to prove Tide can depend on him

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — After spending much of the year as a defensive end, Crimson Tide freshman D.J. Pettway has worked a little this month at outside linebacker.

“I think what D.J. Pettway has to do is, no matter how well he can pass rush, is he has to prove that he can be depended on,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “That’s he’s going to do the right thing. That he’s going to be in the right place at the right time, whether it’s on or off the field, so that everybody can trust in him that he’s going to do the things that he’s supposed to do.

“Talking about responsibility for your own self-determination, I think that’s important for everybody in the organization. Guys that can do that usually do a good job of going in there and developing the kind of respect and trust with their teammates that they need so that people want to play with them. But he is a guy that does have pass rush ability and can help us.”

Thoughts from Saturday’s Alabama football practice

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — The Crimson Tide worked out Saturday morning in full pads before sending the players off for Christmas. They’ll get Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off before returning to work Wednesday.

Alabama practiced in its indoor facility for the third straight day. Head coach Nick Saban said he would like his team to practice in the same temperature in which it will play in Miami Gardens, Fla., for the BCS National Championship Game. He said he anticipates that being 65 to 70 degrees.

Freshman linebacker Denzel Devall rode the exercise bike after standing and watching Friday. He hurt his knee Wednesday as Alabama worked on blocking field goals and is listed as day-to-day.

Freshman D.J. Pettway worked out with the linebackers for the second straight day.
