Quick Story: Alabama moves to NIT quarterfinals with 66-54 win over Stanford

Redshirt freshman Retin Obasohan picked a great time to have the second half of his life. After a struggle of a first half, 0-for-4 from the floor and all five points from the free throw line, the redshirt freshman exploded for nine second-half points to end the game with 14 in the 66-54 win over Stanford.

Alabama will host its NIT quarterfinal game on Tuesday night against the winner of the Denver-Maryland game, with the Terrapins being the No. 2 seed.

Alabama got a game-high 16 points from Levi Randolph, then 10 from both Trevor Releford and Nick Jacobs for its four double-digit scorers. Devonta Pollard led the Crimson Tide with eight rebounds to go along with four points.

The Crimson Tide had foul trouble on its side in the second half, as the Cardinal committed its seventh team foul of the second half with over seven minutes to go in the second half. After that point, Alabama hit 10 of its 12 free throw attempts, ending the game with a 84.6 percentage from the charity stripe (22-26).

The Cardinal was led by Chasson Randle with 11 points and also had Robbie Lemons score in double-digits with 10. Stanford’s leading scorer Dwight Powell was held to just two points in 24 minutes after missing a great portion of the first half with foul trouble.

Alabama coach Anthony Grant had a good time Saturday morning as he brought his Crimson Tide to Richmond, Va., to face his old team, Virginia Commonwealth.

Grant, who coached VCU to three conference titles in three seasons during 2006-09, said in a Crimson Tide Network radio interview how much he enjoyed seeing some old friends after Alabama arrived at the Rams’ Siegel Center. But after that, Grant had a pretty lousy day.

His Crimson Tide missed its first eight shots, needed 10 minutes to make its first basket and struggled all day in an 73-54 loss to the Rams on Saturday afternoon. Alabama has lost three straight after starting the season 6-0.

Alabama entered the game averaging only 12 turnovers a game but on this day, the Tide made 13 in the first half and 18 for the game. Tide guard Rodney Cooper started the game by making a pair of foul shots for a 2-0 lead, but that’s the only time Alabama led.

Fewer than 15 minutes into the game, Alabama trailed 26-7 and never cut the lead into single digits after that.

The Crimson Tide got the margin down to 11 at 39-28 with 16:05 to play, but VCU went on a 23-10 run and led comfortably after that.
Alabama freshman forward Devonta Pollard scored a season-high 13 points off the bench, making five of seven shots from the field. He also had eight rebounds, which also is a season best. Tide guard Levi Randolph added 10 points in 33 minutes of action.

Thoughts from Alabama’s basketball exhibition game

The announced attendance at Coleman Coliseum was 10,547. There may not have been quite that many.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Alabama beat Division II Stillman College 76-68 at home Tuesday night as Tide head coach Anthony Grant experimented with different lineups and allowed several players plenty of time on the court.

Freshman Devonta Pollard had 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes. Nick Jacobs had a team-high 16 points and five rebounds, while starting center Moussa Gueye contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Trevor Lacey had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes.

Here are just some thoughts from watching the game:

–Pollard started slow, but it’s clear he’s going to be an excellent player. A slender 6-foot-8 forward who was a five-star recruit, Pollard scored three of his points in the first half and made all three of his turnovers before intermission. He’s a good athlete and a tremendous leaper, and Grant said Pollard adds a dimension to the team it very much needs. That’s easy to see.

–Gueye, the 7-foot-0 center from Senegal, played in only 12 games last season because of a knee injury. With the injury and lack of conditioning, when he did play, he didn’t play a lot.

This year, he has dropped from 292 pounds to 255 and is moving much better. He said the knee feels stiff sometimes but once he warms up, he’s fine. Alabama really needs somebody big in the middle, and he appears ready and willing to give it a try.

–Grant put Lacey at point guard to start the game and had Trevor Releford come off the bench. Lacey struggled a bit, and the offense looked a little out of sorts. But Alabama will need him to help spell Releford during the season, and certainly it helped to play the position against a small, quick Stillman team.

–Sophomore guard Levi Randolph isn’t the greatest shooter in the world, but he plays hard. He finished with two points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in 34 minutes. He also made five turnovers. But everything he does is at full speed.
