Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy got to play in a regular-season game for the first time in his two-year NFL career today and led the New York Jets to a come-from-behind 7-6 home win over Arizona.

McElroy entered the game in relief of struggling Mark Sanchez with 4:48 left in the third quarter. On McElroy’s second series, he quarterbacked a 10-play drive that ended in a touchdown. He rolled out to his right and threw a 1-yard scoring pass to Jeff Cumberland in the back of the end zone.

Sanchez had completed 10 for 21 for 97 yards and three interceptions when he left. The Jets trailed the Cardinals 3-0. McElroy finished 5 of 7 for 29 yards.

“It was fun. We were having a good time,” McElroy told reporters, according to newyorkjets.com. “It was exciting to get a shot and go in there. Fortunately, my teammates did a fantastic job executing.”

McElroy usually is the third-string quarterback, but he got the call over backup Tim Tebow, who was inactive as he recovers from two fractured ribs.

Jets fans chanted “Mc-El-Roy!” throughout the first three quarters as Sanchez failed to get any points for the Jets.

McElroy was a seventh-round pick last year, who missed all of the 2011 season with a thumb injury.

For Arizona on Sunday, former Alabama safety Rashad Johnson had a tackle.

In other games involving former Alabama players:

–Cleveland won two in a row for the first time this year, beating Oakland 20-17. Browns running back Trent Richardson had 72 yards on 20 carries. He scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, giving him eight touchdowns for the season. In addition, he caught three passes for 23 yards.

Saban still not a fan of recruiting rule that doesn’t let him travel in spring

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Alabama pulled in one of the school’s best recruiting classes in 2008, and the group still is affecting the team as it aims for a third national title in four years.

When asked about the class today, Tide coach Nick Saban took the opportunity for a small shot at a rule change shortly after he signed that class. Popularly known as the “Saban rule,” head football coaches aren’t allowed to go to high schools in the spring to evaluate players.

“I was still allowed to go out on the road, so I got to see most of those guys practice,” Saban said. “Probably the best recruiting class I’ve ever been associated with or been a part of assembling. The evaluation was good and the development of the players was really good. There were a lot of good people in that class. Obviously, the amount of success they’ve had certainly indicates the competitive character they have, the kind of people they have as well as their ability.”

Alabama signed five eventual NFL first-round draft choices (receiver Julio Jones, safety Mark Barron, defensive lineman Marcell Dareus, linebacker Dont’a Hightower and running back Mark Ingram), two second-round choices (linebacker Courtney Upshaw and noseguard Terrence Cody) and a seventh-round pick (H-back Brad Smelley).

Also, safety Robert Lester, defensive end Damion Square and tight end Michael Williams still are with the team and are three-year starters. Offensive lineman Barrett Jones is a four-year starter and likely will go within the first three rounds of the NFL draft, according to ESPN draft analysts.

He had three tackles, and his biggest came in the fourth quarter when he sacked Eli Manning, who fumbled. Gilberry recovered the ball, too. Trent Richardson re-injured his ribs in the second quarter of Cleveland’s game with Indianapolis, and the former Alabama running back remained on the bench for the rest of the game.

Richardson was hit in the side the previous week but played today with protection for his ribs. He finished with 8 yards on eight carries against the Colts and caught a pair of passes for 11 yards.

Richardson said Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur made the call to pull him from the game.

“The injury was pretty bad, I guess it limited me a lot,” Richardson told reporters, according to The Associated Press. “I sat down, so, you know, it just hurt me not being out there, hurt me inside not being out there.

“I didn’t want to come out. I said Pat knows what’s best. He made his decision, and I think he made a great decision.”

Other performances from former Alabama players today:

–Linebacker Dont’a Hightower had seven tackles in New England’s 29-26 win over the New York Jets. His biggest play was a 10-yard sack of Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez late in the fourth quarter. Tied 23-23, New York faced third-and-seven at the New England 15 before Hightower made his play.

Hightower might miss Sunday’s Patriots game

Former Alabama standout Dont’a Hightower may miss Sunday’s game with New England.

The Patriots rookie starts at linebacker, and he injured his his hamstring Sunday at Buffalo. The team says it will be a game-time decision before the Patriots play at Denver on Sunday.

“Right now it’s going to be a day-to-day thing,” Hightower told the Boston Herald before today’s practice. “It’s going to be up to Jimbo [trainer Jim Whalen] and Coach [Bill] Belichick, but each day I’m feeling better and moving around great, so it’s going to be a game-time decision. It’s going to be up to them.”

When asked if it was his call to make, would he be likely to play, Hightower told the newspaper, “Like I said, it’s up to Coach [Belichick]. If he feels I can go, then I’m going to be out there and doing everything I can. But there’s no pain. I’m out there running around and doing everything I can, so what can I say? It’s a day-to-day thing.”

Hightower has played in four games this season, all starts, and made 17 tackles. He also scored a touchdown on a fumble return.

The Buffalo Bills scored a 35-17 win over Kansas City today as the team paid tribute to former Alabama player Marcell Dareus.

Dareus, a second-year defensive tackle, played after traveling to Birmingham this past week to mourn the death of his brother. Dareus’ younger brother, Simeon Gilmore, was one of three people killed during a burglary in Pelham on Sunday.

“He’s going through a rough time, but he felt responsibilities here,” Kyle Williams told reporters, according to The Associated Press. “He always picks our team up and we’re glad that he’s back.”

Dareus played with a shoulder injury, but still had two tackles, a sack and two stops behind the line. Another former Alabama defensive lineman, Mark Anderson, had three tackles for the Bills, including one behind the line.

“The team rallied up around me. This is my release from whatever is going on in the outside world,” Dareus told reporters. “I focused in on the football field and took everything else out of my head.”

For Kansas City, ex-Crimson Tide defensive back Javier Arenas had three tackles, returned three punts for 40 yards and ran back two kickoffs for 40 yards.

They weren’t the only former Alabama standouts to shine today. New Orleans lost 35-27 to Carolina but Mark Ingram rushed for 53 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Saints defensive back Roman Harper of Alabama had three tackles.

Arizona beat New England 20-18 as safety Rashad Johnson had a tackle. For the Patriots, linebacker Dont’a Hightower managed five stops, including one behind the line.

Tampa Bay safety Mark Barron had 10 tackles and defended two passes, but the Bucs fell 41-34 to the New York Giants.

Philadelphia beat Baltimore as middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans had a big day. He made seven tackles, one sack for a 13-yard loss and two stops behind the line. In addition, he intercepted a pass, although he didn’t gain any yards on the return. Still, it set up a touchdown.

For the Ravens, linebacker Courtney Upshaw had six tackles, including one behind the line.

Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain had two tackles in Oakland’s 35-13 loss to Miami.

Chargers fullback Le’Ron McClain rushed for 19 yards on two carries as San Diego beat Tennessee 38-10. Also for the Chargers, linebacker Jarret Johnson had a tackle.

Dont’a Hightower’s touchdown (video)

A Daily Bama Blog reader asked about video of New England rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower’s touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.

He picked up a Jake Locker fumble and ran it 6 yards for the score. If you watch the video, you’ll see good ball security as he goes into the end zone. I always thought he would’ve been a good pass-catching tight end, if he hadn’t been placed at linebacker. Can you imagine having to tackle him regularly through a 16-game NFL schedule?

Hightower’s debut impresses Bill Belichick

The day after New England beat the Tennessee Titans 34-13, Patriots coach Bill Belichick had nice things to say about rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who had five tackles, one stop for lost yardage and a fumble return for a touchdown in his NFL debut.

At Belichick’s Monday news conference, he spoke about Hightower, rookie defensive end Chandler Jones and the training Hightower received at Alabama from Nick Saban, who coached under Belichick for four years in Cleveland.

“I’d say that Dont’a has a lot of responsibility at his position, relative to formations and adjustments, pass coverage, run responsibilities and all that,” Belichick told reporters, according to a transcript provided by the Patriots. “He did a lot of those things at Alabama and played a couple different spots at Alabama in their defense, which has some similarities to what we do. I think he was very well-coached and schooled when he got here. He’s a smart guy. He’s picking things up pretty well.

“Chandler, less experienced but probably less variables at his position, although there are still plenty of them, but probably not to the degree that Dont’a has a regular and nickel linebacker and all those kind of things. Both players have done a reasonably good job of that. They’re both smart, they’ve worked hard and they’ve both been out there. They’ve both gotten a lot of reps on the field.

“That’s always good way to learn, is to experience it and go through it, make a mistake, correct it, go out there, do it again and get it right. There’s a lot to be said for that and those guys, really a lot of our young players have had an opportunity to do that – they’ve been on the field, they’ve practiced, they’ve made mistakes, they’ve gone back out and done them right the next time and been able to move onto something else. That’s been a positive. Those two guys, they’ve done a good job.”

We would love to tell you what Hightower said, but Belichick has a rule that’s similar to what Saban has at Alabama: Rookies aren’t allowed to talk to reporters. It’s the same for first-year players at Alabama.

Former Alabama receiver Julio Jones is well on his way to the big year many are expecting from him.

In a 40-24 win over Kansas City, Jones had six catches for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He hooked up with Matt Ryan for scoring throws of 8 and 14 yards. For Kansas City, Javier Arenas returned four kickoffs for 79 yards and one punt for 14 yards.

Also, in New England’s game against the Tennessee Titans, Patriots rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower picked up a fumble and returned it 6 yards for a touchdown. In addition, he had five tackles, including one behind the line. Defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick added one tackle for the Pats.

For the Houston Texans, cornerback Kareem Jackson had a big day in a 30-10 win over Miami. He made five tackles, defended two passes and intercepted a Ryan Tannehill pass, returning it 3 yards.

Trent Richardson made his debut in Cleveland’s 17-16 loss to Philadelphia, rushing for 39 yards on 19 carries and catching one pass for 5 yards. For the Eagles, linebacker DeMeco Ryans had five tackles.

The Buffalo Bills lost 48-28 to the New York Jets, and Marcell Dareus had a tackle for Buffalo.

New Orleans fell 40-32 to Washington. Mark Ingram rushed six times for the Saints, gaining 15 yards. New Orleans safety Roman Harper had nine tackles.

Arizona safety Rashad Johnson made two tackles as the Cardinals beat the Seattle Seahawks 20-16.

Rookie safety Mark Barron made his debut in the Tampa Bay Bucs’ 16-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, who are quarterbacked by Cam Newton. Barron made three tackles and broke up two of Newton’s passes, including a deep ball on third-and-nine in the fourth quarter.

Hightower’s new number, notes on other ex-Tide stars in NFL

Former Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower wore No. 45 in preseason with the New England Patriots, but the team recently switched him to No. 54.

As the Boston Herald points out, that number has some history with the Patriots. It also belonged to former standout Tedy Bruschi.

“I definitely feel honored to be able to wear this number,” Hightower told the newspaper. “I haven’t spoken to Tedy yet about it, but I’ve read that he didn’t want it to be retired and he hoped another linebacker would come in and be able to wear this number and be able to play as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to live up to the hype of that.”

Funny enough, it’s an important number in Alabama history, too, especially for middle linebackers, which is where Hightower played often last season for the Crimson Tide. Lee Roy Jordan wore No. 54 when he was a first-team All-America center and middle linebacker at Alabama in 1962. Jordan also was an NFL All-Pro with the Dallas Cowboys, where he wore No. 55 and played middle linebacker. Rolando McClain, Hightower’s predecessor at Alabama that position, wears No. 55 for the Oakland Raiders.

Other notes involving Alabama in the NFL: According to the injury report the NFL provides to The Associated Press, Cincinnati cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (knee) and Seattle guard James Carpenter (knee) are out for this weekend’s games. Arizona safety Rashad Johnson (abdomen) and Cleveland running back Trent Richardson (knee) are listed as questionable. Baltimore linebacker Courtney Upshaw (shoulder) is probable.

We have to give Alabama Pro Updates (@BamaProUpdates on Twitter) credit for looking through the NFL injury report. We were prepared to do it, but while sitting down at the computer this evening, we discovered it already had been done.

Pats gave Hightower big responsibility in preseason game

Masslive.com has an excellent piece about Dont’a Hightower calling the defensive plays in the New England Patriots’ exhibition loss to Philadelphia.

Hightower, a former Alabama All-America linebacker, is a rookie with the Patriots.

The most entertaining part of the story: Hightower forgetting sometimes that there’s a speaker in his helmet that allows the defensive coordinator to talk to him during games.

“It’s something that I’m not used to. The couple of times that we did it at practice, I was kind of lost,” Hightower told MassLive.com. “I didn’t know who was talking to me. I still didn’t know for a while that it was (defensive coordinator Matt Patricia).”

Ex-Tide players in Monday NFL game

Former Alabama player DeMeco Ryans, a star under Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula, had five tackles as the Philadelphia Eagles scored a 27-17 win over New England in Monday night NFL exhibition action.

For the Patriots, rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower started and made one tackle.

Another former Alabama player, Eagles left guard Evan Mathis, offered afterward to take the blame for quarterback Michael Vick getting hurt, even though it was a player who was being blocked by another lineman who laid into Vick’s ribs.

Mathis lost control of his man, which forced Vick to step into another area and get hit by linebacker Jermaine Cunningham.

“Completely my fault,” Mathis told Philadelphia Comcast afterward. “It’s something that can’t happen. Something we’ve got to work out. Fortunately, Michael is not too seriously injured, but it’s very concerning. It’s our job to keep him safe. To keep him off the turf. When the quarterback takes a hit and is laying on the ground, you feel it.”

In more former Alabama player news, the Cincinnati Bengals’ Dre Kirkpatrick passed his physical exam as expected and was activated. Kirkpatrick broke a bone in his knee almost a month ago.

Hightower wants to dominate for Pats

When you recall Dont’a Hightower at Alabama, does the word “dominant” come to mind? Even if it didn’t on first thought, do you agree with it?

Yes, me too.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Hightower wants to dominate.

“I’m going with the same mindset that I always have, which is to go in and be dominant, and be accountable to my teammates, and do what I have to do get off the field and whatever I have to do to get the victory,” Hightower told the Herald.

Mark Ingram lauds a former Tide teammate

Mark Ingram didn’t miss a chance to say good things about former Alabama teammate Dont’a Hightower recently. Ingram, now with the New Orleans Saints, was asked about Hightower by the Boston Herald.

Hightower is a rookie with the New England Patriots, who chose him in the first round of this past spring’s draft.

“Just a big, strong, powerful guy,” Ingram told the newspaper. “He can play middle (linebacker). He can rush the passer. He can cover out (of) the backfield. He’s just a complete linebacker and a playmaker on the field.”

Here’s the link to the story: Dont’a Hightower
