TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Four former Alabama football players arrested after two on-campus robberies are set to have their cases presented to a Tuscaloosa County grand jury.

Safety Eddie Williams, linebacker Dennis Pettway and running back/H-back Brent Calloway all waived their rights to a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday before Tuscaloosa District Court Judge James C. Guin. Linebacker Tyler Hayes’ case was automatically sent to a grand jury on Monday.

The players were dismissed from school following a judicial review.

Williams, Pettway and Hayes are charged with two counts of second-degree robbery after two students were attacked in separate robberies on Feb. 11. Williams and Calloway are both charged with using a stolen debit card.

Williams and Calloway – both 20 – and 18-year-old Pettway are seeking youthful offender status.

Hayes, 18, and Williams confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back. Williams said Pettway and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams and Calloway both admitted to using a stolen campus debit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory, the documents said.

Numerous reports have confirmed that the four players arrested in connection with two robberies on campus: Tyler Hayes, Eddie Williams, Brent Calloway and D.J. Pettway, are “no longer associated with the team.”

The four were indefinitely suspended from the team after their arrests and were later barred from campus before being kicked off the team, according to Wednesday’s reports.

The University of Alabama released a statement on the matter Wednesday afternoon.

“UA’s judicial review has been completed. The four students involved in the robberies on campus are no longer enrolled in UA,” the statement noted.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said the players’ actions did not “reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization reflect.”

“Their actions do not reflect the spirit and character that we want our organization to reflect,” Saban said. “It’s obviously very disappointing and unacceptable what happened.”

The wide receiving corps has also taken a hit, according to the same reports. Marvin Shinn has decided to forego offseason workouts and is expected to transfer. Shinn caught six passes for 42 yards in 2012, two for 14 yards in the BCS National Championship Game.

Another Mobile area product, wide receiver Danny Woodson Jr., has been suspended for a violation of team rules and will not participate in spring practice. Woodson Jr., the son of former Alabama quarterback Danny Sr., caught one pass for nine yards in the 2012 season.

Finally, in the wide receiving corps, Kevin Norwood, Alabama’s No. 2 wide receiver behind Amari Cooper last season, has been held out of offseason workouts with a toe injury and has an uncertain status for spirng practice. Norwood caught 29 passes for 461 yards last season. Cornerback John Fulton is in a similar situation after injuring his toe in the Texas A&M loss and having surgery on it.

TimesDaily complete report on 4 arrested UA football players

TUSCALOOSA — Former Russellville standout Brent Calloway was suspended from the Alabama football team today after being charged a day earlier with fraudulent use of a debit/credit card. Three of his teammates were also suspended after being charged with knocking students unconscious and stealing their wallets.

Calloway, 20, was accused of using one victim’s university action card/debit card and knowing it was stolen, according to a deposition filed in Tuscaloosa County District Court.

The deposition (which can be seen here) said Calloway admitted using the card for numerous purchases from the vending machine on the first floor of Bryant Hall. Calloway, a running back, was released on $5,000 bail.

The other football players arrested Monday:

– Defensive back Eddie Williams was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and also fraudulent use of a credit/debit card. He was released on $65,000 bail.
– Linebacker Tyler Hayes was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Defensive lineman Dennis “D.J.” Pettway was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery. He was released on $60,000 bail.
– Hayes, 18, and Williams, 20, confessed to robbing a student who was punched in the head and face and kicked in the ribs and back early Monday morning, according to court documents.

Williams said Pettway, 20, and Hayes waited in a nearby vehicle about an hour later while he knocked out and robbed another student. Williams and Hayes both admitted to their involvement, according to the documents.

Williams also admitted to using a stolen credit card to buy snacks from vending machines inside a dormitory.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people,” football coach Nick Saban said in a statement released this afternoon. “The university and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

All four players were backups last season for Alabama, which has won two straight national titles and three of the past four. Williams didn’t play in 2012. But he was one of the nation’s top prospects the previous year and moved from receiver to safety.

The first student reported having his Apple Macbook Pro stolen from his backpack. Both sustained mild concussions, cuts on the face and heavy swelling, and had their wallets taken, according to documents.

The first incident occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the 800 block of Campus Drive and the second at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 200 block of Seventh Avenue, the school said today in a release.

University police posted an advisory Monday saying two students reported being robbed after they were approached by two men who asked for a light for a cigarette.

Athletics Director Mal Moore issued the following statement: “This is a very serious matter and we are very disappointed in the actions that have resulted in the charges against these student-athletes. In this type of situation, the athletics department works in conjunction with the university. We will have more to say at the appropriate time.”

Police also said Williams had been arrested on a charge of carrying a pistol without a permit a day before his Monday arrest. Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Brent Blankley said in a news release that a clerk at a gas station called police early Sunday, telling officers that Williams threatened that he had something in his trunk after a fight about paying for gas.

Officers who pulled over Williams found a pistol in his pants pocket, the release said. In that case, he was released on $500 bail.

Jail records did not show whether any of the players had an attorney.

This is the second arrest for Calloway since he signed a scholarship with the Crimson Tide in 2011.

He was arrested on marijuana possession charges in October 2012 as a passenger in a vehicle stopped on campus.

A high school All-American at Russellville and four-star recruit, Calloway, along with the other three players, all were backup players on the 2012 National Championship team.

As a senior at Russellville, Calloway ran for 1,974 yards and 29 touchdowns while also starring at linebacker.

He made headlines in January 2011 after switching his long-standing commitment from Alabama to Auburn. Another change of heart led him to sign with the Tide in February 2011.

Saban in statement: 4 arrested are suspended indefinitely

After Director of Media Relation Cathy Andreen and athletic director Mal Moore released statements on Tuesday morning, head coach Nick Saban released his Tuesday afternoon.

In the statement, Saban officially suspends the four players arrested Monday night: Brent Calloway, Eddie Williams, D.J. Pettway and Tyler Hayes.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

Countdown: 15 days until the BCS National Championship Game

Each day until the BCS National Championship Game, Daily Bama Blog contributor Brett Hudson will count down to kickoff, giving us bits and pieces of that day’s significance to Alabama and Notre Dame. Today is 15 days until the game, which means Brett is examining the number “15.”

Thoughts from Tuesday’s Alabama practice

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — The Crimson Tide went through a second straight day practicing inside the indoor facility. That will be routine for the week, considering Saturday’s SEC Championship Game will be inside the Georgia Dome.

Alabama true freshman safety Eddie Williams got some work with the scout team as a wide receiver. He wore No. 12, which is the jersey number of Georgia’s Tavarres King, who is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds. Williams stands 6-3 and 204 and came to Alabama as a prospect to play either receiver or defensive back.

Noseguard Brandon Ivory (ankle) stood and watched for the media viewing period, which covered about 16 minutes. Alabama coach Nick Saban said Monday that Ivory should be able to play Saturday.

Offensive guard Chance Warmack wore a heavy tape job on his hand, which is protecting an injured finger. He has said the tape looks worse that it actually is.

Here’s a short video of the Alabama receivers today, which gives you a look at how Kevin Norwood (83) and Chris Black (5) are running. They both looked fine at practice. Norwood, who has struggled with a leg injury this week, had a good week of practice last week, and it paid off with five catches and a pair of touchdowns against Auburn.

Why shoot receivers for the second straight day? Well, they practice the closest to where we’re allowed to stand when the Tide works out inside.

Tide freshman learns the ropes at safety

Eddie Williams arrived at Alabama this year with the “athlete” label, which meant he could play several different skill positions, either on offense or defense.

The Crimson Tide placed the 6-foot-3, 204-pound Williams at wide receiver, but with safety Jarrick Williams going down with a knee injury, the true freshman shifted positions Friday.

Eddie Williams hasn’t had a chance to learn much yet.

“We’re telling him what to do every play,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “We just moved him there yesterday. He had one practice there last night. We’re trying to tell him what to do every play.

“It’s really not fair to make any kind of evaluation because he doesn’t even know how to do this stuff. We’re telling him what to do, but we haven’t really taught him how to do it or why it’s important to do it that way. One thing he showed at receiver, he’s big, very physical. Hopefully, he’ll be able to add some range. The big thing is being a good tackler and can he play man-to-man. But I think he’s going to have to get comfortable, sort of, learning the system. That might take a little while but we’re going to work hard to develop him.”

He has had experience at safety in high school. In fact, Scout.com rated him the No. 3 safety in the nation last year. He played safety in the Under Armour All-American game in January.
