Softball suffers third-straight sweep in Baton Rouge

For the first time since early April of 2011, the Alabama softball team has gone through a three-game weekend in Southeastern Conference without recording a victory, losing all three to the LSU Tigers. Alabama lost on Friday and Sunday 4-3 then 2-1 on Saturday.

In the last five years, the Tide has lost all eight games it has played in Baton Rouge. This was Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy’s first trip to Baton Rouge since his decision to leave the Tide for the LSU head coaching job after the 2011 season and changing his mind a day later.

Alabama tallied eight hits in the Sunday loss and only scored three runs compared to LSU’s four runs on six hits.

Jackie Traina pitched two of the three games, throwing 11.2 innings and giving up 11 hits and eight runs, seven earned. Leslie Jury pitched the Saturday game, giving up six hits and two runs, both earned.

Alabama dropped the first game of the series in extra-innings as televised by ESPN2. Click here for more from that game.

Down two, bottom of the seventh. Two outs. Bases loaded, and the No. 9 hole hitter is at the plate for the Crimson Tide – true freshman Andrea Hawkins.

Showing savvy beyond her years, Hawkins drew one of two consecutive bases loaded walks that tied the game 2-2 going into extra-innings before LSU got a walk-off hit from Sandra Simmons that put Alabama down one game to none in the three-game series that will decide the SEC West Champion.

Alabama was held to just six hits in the eight-inning affair, with no member of the Tide posting a multi-hit game. Jackie Traina pitched all 7.2 innings for the Tide and allowed seven hits and three runs, all three earned. Alabama and LSU play again Friday night and Saturday afternoon, and the Tide has to win both to take the No. 1 seed in the SEC West division moving forward to the SEC Tournament.

Here’s the full box score, if you would like.

Long balls push both Alabama baseball and softball to Tuesday night wins

The Southeastern Louisiana Lions had put together five strong innings, outhitting the Crimson Tide five to three through five innings.

Then, for the first time since June of 2010, Alabama had multiple home runs in one inning, as third baseman Kenny Roberts and first baseman Austen Smith both turned on two-out three-run homers in the bottom of the sixth, pushing Alabama to a 9-1 win.

“I’ve got no problem with three-run homers,” Alabama baseball coach Mitch Gaspard said. “That was good to see and to especially have one that was a no-doubter.

“I’m happy for Kenny Roberts – not only tonight, but the way he has stayed with it and stuck with a plan and really had a consistent year for us both offensively and defensively and that was a big blow for him tonight to hit the three-run homer.”

Roberts and center fielder Georgie Salem both had multi-hit games, both going 2-4 and combining for four RBI and two runs.

The Tide used four relief pitchers after Tucker Hawley’s five-inning start in which he walked two batters and struck two out while giving up five hits. Mike Oczypok, Justin Kamplain, Mitch Greer and Ray Castillo all pitched one inning in the win.

Relief pitcher steadies softball Tide in mercy-rule win

Alabama pitcher Lauren Sewell left the circle in disappointment, having her start ended by coach Patrick Murphy after 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven batters.

What ended her start five outs early with that kind of line? The seven free passes – four via the walk and three via hit batters.

“I think when your starting pitcher hits (a batter), walks, hits, walks and strikes out seven or eight, it just doesn’t make sense to me,” Murphy said. “If she can strike out seven or eight she doesn’t need to hit or walk a couple of them, so we need to work on that.”

It was Leslie Jury that entered and pitched 1.2 no-hit shutout innings and watched as Alabama scored 11 runs on 12 hits to earn the 11-3 win in five innings over Jacksonville State.

The Tide scored in bunches against the Gamecocks, scoring five in the bottom of the second then four more in the bottom of the fourth. It was first baseman Jadyn Spencer’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth that put Alabama in mercy-rule range before a two-out two RBI single from Jackie Traina ended the game two innings early.

Alabama center fielder Haylie McCleney went 4-4 from the plate with two RBI and three runs, including the game’s winning run. Senior left fielder Kayla Braud, batting behind McCleney in the No. 2 hole, went 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Rubber match upcoming for baseball, softball drops series-opener

History indeed repeats itself – and, as is often feared, it repeats itself in a negative way.

The Alabama baseball team opened the season with a six-game winning streak before going on to lose three of its next four games. Alabama reeled off another one in the last two weeks before Friday night’s 6-3 loss to Auburn now has the Crimson Tide losing two of its last three games.

Auburn starting pitcher Michael O’Neil pitched 7.2 innings and held the Tide to eight hits and three runs, none of them earned. Alabama starter Jon Keller has an uncharacteristically shaky start, pitching five innings and allowing six hits and six runs, all earned.

Auburn took a 2-1 lead and pulled away with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning, largely on a three-run home run from first baseman Garrett Cooper.

Alabama and Auburn will break the series tie with a 3 p.m. tilt on Saturday afternoon televised by CSS. You can click here to read the bits and information posted about the series before Thursday’s season opener.

The Alabama softball team also had a hot streak come to an end with its 3-2 loss to Texas A&M in College Station. The Tide had won eight of its last nine games before that loss.

Alabama starting pitcher Jackie Traina pitched a quality start (six innings, four hits, three runs, all earned, eight strikeouts), but one swing of the bat did the Tide in, as Aggie pitcher Mel Dumezich hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Alabama hopes to tie the series with a 4 p.m. Saturday game before ending the series at noon on Sunday.

Softball shakes off three-game losing streak with Sunday win

The Alabama softball team took to the road for its first Southeastern Conference series of the season and just avoided the program’s first four-game losing streak since 2004. After losing a midweek tilt to No. 4 Florida (which you can read more about by clicking here, including press conference video), the Crimson Tide lost the first two games of SEC play before bouncing back for a 7-1 win on Sunday.

Alabama lost 2-1 to the Lady Volunteers after a 4-3 loss on Friday (you can read more about Friday’s loss by clicking here). On Saturday, Alabama’s Leslie Jury pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and

two earned runs. Tennessee starter Ivy Renfroe blanked Traina, third baseman Danielle Richard, center fielder Haylie McCleney and first baseman Leona Lafaele, as the foursome went a combined 0-for-11 from the plate on Saturday.

Alabama’s 7-1 win on Sunday saw the Tide bats explode after a disappointing Saturday, including a 3-for-4 performance from McCleney and two RBI from Richard on a 2-3 day at the plate. Traina returned ti usual form, pitching seven innings and giving up two hits and a run.

Alabama will skip playing midweek games this week as it prepares for a three-game series on the road with the South Carolina Gamecocks over the weekend.

Recap of Alabama’s Friday night action

The No. 4 Alabama gymnastics team swept the home-and-home with the LSU Tigers this season, completing the sweep with a 197.725-197.750 win over the No. 4 Tigers in Baton Rouge. The 197.725 is not only Alabama’s best score this season, but also the best score by any road team in the nation in 2013.

The Crimson Tide got the win despite a perfect 10 from LSU’s final performer on the final event, Lloimincia Hall on the floor exercise.

“It was just an extraordinary night of college gymnastics,” Alabama coach Sarah Patterson said. “It was loud, it was rocking and both teams put up great performances.”

Alabama set a new season-high on the vault with a 49.525m led by sophomore Kayla Williams with a career-best 9.975. Alabama had two freshmen, Carley Sims and Lauren Beers, set new career-highs on the vault with a 9.875 and a 9.925, respectively.

Alabama will face No. 1 Oklahoma in its final regular season meet of the season at home on March 15th.

Alabama baseball lost a hard-fought extra-innings contest on the road with No. 5 Louisville 4-3 in 14 innings. Alabama reliever Jay Shaw walked in Louisville’s game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the 14th.

Alabama’s offensive effort were highlighted by senior third baseman Kenny Roberts, who was 3-for-6 from the plate.

Alabama got strong performances from releivers Ray Castillo, Mitch Greer and Justin Kamplain. The trio came in to pitch six innings and give up just two hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

The Tide (8-5) meets the Cardinals (10-2) again Saturday and Sunday to complete the three-game series.

Like the baseball squad, Alabama softball lost in heartbreaking fashion, as the No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers got a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to win 4-3.

Alabama starting pitcher Jackie Traina fell to 10-2 on the season,

pitching 6.1 innings and allowing seven hits and four runs, all earned, while walking five batters and striking out four.

Offensively, Alabama was highlighted by the No. 1 and 9 hitters. Kayla Braud led off for the Tide and was 2-4 with a run scored, while Andrea Hawkins was 2-3 with two RBI in the No. 9 hole.

Alabama (22-2, 0-1 SEC) will face Tennessee (20-3, 1-0 SEC) again Saturday and Sunday to complete its first weekend series of SEC play.

No. 1 Alabama softball drops first game of the 2013 season to No. 4 Florida

Alabama’s steady J-Train had a rare mishap Wednesday and left the opposition an easy opportunity to pass through Rhoads Stadium with a win.

Crimson Tide pitcher Jackie Traina have up six runs and nine hits in the last two innings that led the No. 4 Florida Gators to a 8-4 win over the No. 1 Alabama team that suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 22-1.

“Anytime you go into the sixth inning with a one-hitter, with a 4-2 lead, and you get the first out, it should be a win,” Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said. “And they end up with 10 hits. We have to do a better job.

“We had a few earlier mishaps. It probably should’ve been 4-1.”

Despite the disappointing performance that was ended two-thirds of an inning early, her first start that was not a complete game, Murphy was encouraged by certain things.

“She needed to get ahead, and she needed to finish them off,” Murphy said. “A couple of pitches she definitely left up, waist-high. Those were misses. That means they weren’t hitting her best pitches. When they hit her best pitch, that’s a different story.”

Murphy added the team as a whole would benefit from not the loss, but the experience as a whole.

“I’m glad we got to play them, I think it will help us down the road,” Murphy said. “We have a lot of young kids that felt that pressure for the first time. That’s what we needed, because they’re going to feel it three times this weekend, and three times next weekend. It’s good for us.”

Junior second baseman Kaila Hunt added, “We haven’t seen that good of pitching yet. For some of the younger kids just getting opportunities, that’s good for them. Especially right before SEC (play). I think it was great for us.”

Florida’s pitching was enhanced by a late pitching change, as starter Hannah Rogers had her outing ended in favor of Lauren Haeger, who pitched two hitless innings to end Alabama’s hope of a late comeback.

“They definitely complement each other because Hannah doesn’t throw quite as hard as Haegar,” Hunt said. “Only giving us two innings to adjust to the speed was a good move on their part, but we have to learn to make that adjustment as a team.”
