Former Alabama All-America defensive back Javier Arenas returned a punt 24 yards for Kansas City in a 27-24 win over New Orleans on Sunday, moving to fourth place on the Chiefs’ punt return yardage list.

Arenas finished the day with three returns for 30 yards. In the NFL only since 2010, Arenas has 816 career punt return yards, which puts him past Dale Carter, who had 787 yards for Kansas City during 1992-96. The Chiefs’ all-time leader is J.T. Smith, who 2,289 during 1979-84.

Arenas also returned three kickoffs for 58 yards. He has 1,048 career kickoff return yards, which is 14th in Kansas City history. In addition, he had two tackles.

For the Saints, Roman Harper had a big day with 11 tackles, including one for loss, and two passes defended. He recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, but the replay official ruled the ball carrier was already down when he lost the ball. Also for the Saints, Mark Ingram rushed five times for 11 yards.

Baltimore beat New England 30-21 as noseguard Terrence Cody has had a pair of tackles for the Ravens. Baltimore linebacker Courtney Upshaw added three tackles, including one of receiver Julian Edelman 13 yards behind the line. Linebacker Dont’a Hightower of the Patriots had five stops.

Rookie running back Trent Richardson scored his third touchdown for the Cleveland Browns on a 6-yard run against Buffalo. He finished with 27 rushing yards on 12 carries in a 24-14 loss. In addition, he caught six passes for 24 yards.

For Buffalo, defensive end Mark Anderson had two tackles, including an 11-yard sack on third down in the fourth quarter, despite being held by a lineman. The Bills declined the penalty, of course. Marcell Dareus assisted on a 10-yard sack late in the fourth quarter for his only tackle.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones caught five passes in the first half for 67 yards and a touchdown in a 27-3 win over San Diego, despite missing part of the half with a hand injury.

He hurt a hand when hit by Chargers safety Eric Weddle at the end of a 19-yard reception on the game’s first play from scrimmage. He returned in the second quarter. His touchdown came with 58 seconds left before intermission and covered 9 yards.

For San Diego, linebacker Jarret Johnson had four tackles.

Defensive end Wallace Gilberry had a tackle as Cincinnati beat Washington 38-31. Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick was out with a knee injury he suffered in the preseason.

The Buffalo Bills scored a 35-17 win over Kansas City today as the team paid tribute to former Alabama player Marcell Dareus.

Dareus, a second-year defensive tackle, played after traveling to Birmingham this past week to mourn the death of his brother. Dareus’ younger brother, Simeon Gilmore, was one of three people killed during a burglary in Pelham on Sunday.

“He’s going through a rough time, but he felt responsibilities here,” Kyle Williams told reporters, according to The Associated Press. “He always picks our team up and we’re glad that he’s back.”

Dareus played with a shoulder injury, but still had two tackles, a sack and two stops behind the line. Another former Alabama defensive lineman, Mark Anderson, had three tackles for the Bills, including one behind the line.

“The team rallied up around me. This is my release from whatever is going on in the outside world,” Dareus told reporters. “I focused in on the football field and took everything else out of my head.”

For Kansas City, ex-Crimson Tide defensive back Javier Arenas had three tackles, returned three punts for 40 yards and ran back two kickoffs for 40 yards.

They weren’t the only former Alabama standouts to shine today. New Orleans lost 35-27 to Carolina but Mark Ingram rushed for 53 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Saints defensive back Roman Harper of Alabama had three tackles.

Arizona beat New England 20-18 as safety Rashad Johnson had a tackle. For the Patriots, linebacker Dont’a Hightower managed five stops, including one behind the line.

Tampa Bay safety Mark Barron had 10 tackles and defended two passes, but the Bucs fell 41-34 to the New York Giants.

Philadelphia beat Baltimore as middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans had a big day. He made seven tackles, one sack for a 13-yard loss and two stops behind the line. In addition, he intercepted a pass, although he didn’t gain any yards on the return. Still, it set up a touchdown.

For the Ravens, linebacker Courtney Upshaw had six tackles, including one behind the line.

Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain had two tackles in Oakland’s 35-13 loss to Miami.

Chargers fullback Le’Ron McClain rushed for 19 yards on two carries as San Diego beat Tennessee 38-10. Also for the Chargers, linebacker Jarret Johnson had a tackle.

More on Javier Arenas and his celebrity friend

When we posted about actress Melissa Joan Hart and how she likes Alabama football, it turned into the blog’s most-read post in a month. Seriously. We’re shocked at how much interest it generated.

Hart, the star of “Clarissa Explains It All,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” and “Melissa and Joey,” apparently is good about keeping up with Alabama players even after they finish their Crimson Tide careers. Recently on Twitter, she received a promise of NFL game tickets from former Alabama defensive back Javier Arenas, who is now with the Kansas City Chiefs.

How cute is all of this? Also, it’s my understanding all of her television series are on Netflix.

This actress loves her Crimson Tide

Count 36-year-old actress Melissa Joan Hart as a member of Crimson Tide Nation. The star of shows such as “Clarissa Explains It All,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” and currently “Melissa and Joey” knows her Alabama football.

Maybe you already knew this. I didn’t realize it until I tripped over a post she delivered on Twitter to former Alabama defensive back Javier Arenas, now a third-year defensive back for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Arenas tweeted this July 25: “Checking out all 3 eps. Of Melissa & Joey on abc family right now @MellyJHart”

Then Hart tweeted back: “Xoxo RollTide!” According to Twitter, 29 people retweeted her response, including Arenas.

Not sure what’s more surprising — that Hart likes Alabama enough that she’s Twitter friends with Arenas or that Arenas is a big fan of “Melissa and Joey.”

Hart has more than 227,000 Twitter followers (@MellyJHart), but she follows only 268 people, most of whom are other actors and actresses. But Arenas has made the cut, along with former Alabama players Courtney Upshaw and Mark Ingram.

According to an espn.com story, she became an Alabama fan because of her husband, musician Mark Wilkerson, who is from Andalusia. They met in 2002 and married in 2003. They attended the Alabama-Texas BCS showdown in Pasadena, Calif., three years ago. She apparently wasn’t a college football fan until meeting him.

So maybe Alabama fans should pay her back by watching her show. If you’re not sure when it’s on, just start following Arenas on Twitter (@JavierArenas21). When Hart tweeted last week, “Set your TiVo for Melissa and Joey tonight! #MelissaJoey,” Arenas faithfully retweeted it.

A few notes from Monday's football practice

Forgive me if I’m a little rusty with the football. It’s been a week since taking in one of these media viewing periods because of that NIT trip. Here’s what’s important:

  • The team was inside this afternoon with severe weather headed towards Tuscaloosa.
  • Mark Barron remains in the black non-contact jersey as was backup offensive lineman Tyler Love.
  • Former quarterback Greg McElroy was in the building watching the practice. He’ll have individual workouts tomorrow for NFL scouts since he missed last month’s pro day.
  • Javier Arenas also took in the practice. I joked with him about coming up to the interview room since he is something of a legend when the microphones come on. He politely declined.

Hopefully some video will come soon, but my computer keeps crashing when I connect the camera. Pray for a better resolution on the next try.

    Updating Alabama's NFL rookies

Kareem Jackson takes a good look at Reggie Bush in this AP photo

The NFL preseason continues on. Here is a quick look at a few of the stars from the 2009 Alabama squad who enjoyed a certain degree of success in college.

It is still early in the process and there is still time for these guys to impress the front office before cutdowns.

    • Rolando McClain picked up three tackles in Saturday’s 32-17 Raiders win over the Bears. The Decatur native got his first stop on the Raiders’ opening play on defense stopping the Bears for a two yard gain.
    • The sequel to Terrence Cody’s big debut with the Ravens wasn’t as big, but not bad. He had two tackles — both for losses — in a 22-3 win over Washington.
    • The kick returning that made Javier Arenas a star in Tuscaloosa isn’t hurting his cause in Kansas City.  He picked up a 54-yard kickoff return in the Chiefs 20-15 loss in his hometown of Tampa.
    • The “other” first-round pick, Kareem Jackson made a pair of tackles and broke up a pass in the Texans’ 38-20 loss to Super Bowl champion New Orleans.
    • Brandon Deaderick didn’t make a tackle in last week’s game in Atlanta, but this writer thinks he’ll make the Patriots’ final roster.
