Colts activate former Alabama defensive lineman

The Indianapolis Colts have activated former Alabama noseguard Josh Chapman.

They picked him in the fifth round of this past spring’s NFL draft. However, he hasn’t been able to play as he has recovered from knee surgery.

He played most of his last season at Alabama with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The Colts have room for Chapman because they’ve lost defensive tackle Drake Nevis for the rest of the season and placed him on injured reserve. He hurt his hand Thursday against the Jaguars.

Chapman "being harassed" by teammates, coaches over SI cover

Alabama nose guard Josh Chapman’s brush with celebrity has its drawbacks.

He’s hearing it from all angles after Sports Illustrated released its regional cover for this week’s issue featuring Chapman. Tide coach Nick Saban laughed about it Wednesday, saying he “was wondering how that happened myself.”

“He’s probably happy that he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but he is also being harassed a little bit by the circumstances as well,” Saban said. “Not just by the other players, but by certain coaches.”

Reading between the lines, I have a feeling Saban is roasting the unlikely cover boy just a bit.

Read more about this including perspective from another interior lineman in tomorrow’s newspaper.

Mom to Chapman: Lose the beard

AP photo

Alabama nose guard Josh Chapman went from relatively anonymous interior lineman to SI cover boy in no-time.

Before the news of magazine fame came his way, Chapman said he was getting pressure to clean up his look. Like the more visible AJ McCarron, the second-year starter on the defensive line has more than a 5 o’clock shadow under the helmet and chin strap.

“Momma said I need to go trim it up now,” Chapman said. “She doesn’t like that. I trimmed it up a little bit.”

For momma’s sake, the beard isn’t very obvious on the SI cover that hits streets tomorrow.

A few scrimmage nuggets

Nick Saban just ran through some of the highlights from this afternoon’s closed scrimmage. Here are the highlights:

  • Today’s action was much more “game like” as opposed to last Saturday’s that was more “situational.” The first 50 or so plays were just as they would have been in a game.
  • On the injury front: Josh Chapman bruised a thigh and Trent Richardson bruised a shoulder. Nether were too serious, Saban said.
  • DeQuan Menzie was back out there after getting hurt a week ago. Saban said the JUCO cornerback transfer “held up OK today.”
  • DeMarcus Milliner and Blake Sims were both still on the sidelines today. Sims was wearing a walking boot on his right foot (see photo here).
  • There was more focus placed on the running game this week as opposed to last when it was an air assault.
  • Kicking game was much improved. Cade Foster was 3-for-4 with his only miss being at 52-yarder. Saban said he came back and made one from that distance with room to spare. Jeremy Shelley, the more short-range kicker, went 4-for-4, according to stats kept by UA media relations. More stats to come.
  • The team gets two days off before returning to practice Tuesday. Since starting practice Aug. 5, the only off-day came last Sunday. That schedule, Saban said, is all part of the master plan.

More to come. Hang in there.
