Former Alabama standout Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons will start in the Pro Bowl today.

Jones orginally was selected to the NFC squad as a reserve. However, starting wide receivers Calvin Johnson of Detroit and Brandon Marshall of Chicago have pulled out, which has pushed Jones and the New York Giants’ Victor Cruz into the startine lineup.

NBC will televise the game from Hawaii at 6 p.m. Central time.

Jones caught 79 passes this year for 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns. In two playoff games, he caught 17 passes for 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Atlanta Falcons lost 28-24 to San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game, but former Alabama receiver Julio Jones had a huge day.

Here is how The Associated Press described his day:

Julio Jones was (Matt) Ryan’s favorite receiver most of the day, finishing with 11 catches for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He hauled in a 46-yarder less than four minutes into the game, then made a dazzling grab in the left corner of the end zone for a 20-yard score. He got his left foot down, then planted his right foot about an inch inside the line — while cornerback Tarell Brown was all over him.

It topped a terrific regular season for Jones, in which he caught 79 passes for 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had six catches for 59 yards in a playoff win over Seattle. Only one former Crimson Tide player had a bigger year catching the ball in the NFL — Don Hutson gained 1,211 receiving yards and caught 17 scoring passes for Green Bay in 1942.

Yes, that’s right — former Alabama All-America wide receiver Julio Jones made an interception to preserve the Atlanta Falcons’ 30-28 playoff win over Seattle today.

Matt Bryant put the Falcons up by two points with his 49-yard field goal with eight seconds left. After a short kickoff, Seattle started at its own 46. After a 6-yard pass completion, Russell Wilson threw a desparation pass into the end zone. The Falcons had inserted Jones to help at defensive back, and he responded with the interception.

On offense, he finished with six catches for 59 yards. He also ran the ball once for a 1-yard loss.

Former Alabama standout Julio Jones landed his first Pro Bowl berth today as he made the NFC squad. Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium will host the game Jan. 27.

The other NFC wide receivers include Victor Cruz, N.Y. Giants; Calvin Johnson, Detroit; and Brandon Marshall, Chicago.

Jones ranks 11th in the NFL with 1,142 receiving yards, and his 76 catches are tied for 17th. His 10 receiving touchdowns are tied for sixth.

No other former Alabama player received a Pro Bowl selection today, but as various stars back out of the game, others could wind up with a roster spot.

Here’s a highlight video of Jones, which includes catches from 2011 and 2012. A fan put it together, and it’s worth watching the full 3 minutes, 31 seconds. You can mute the sound, however. They’ve added a background song “Disfunctional,” and beats me why they made that choice. Julio Jones is anything but disfunctional in these highlights.

Julio Jones caught two touchdown passes today in the Atlanta Falcons’ 34-0 win over the New York Giants and went over the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards.

Jones scored on two second-half receptions and finished with six catches for 74 yards.

For the year, he has 69 receptions for 1,071 yards. According to statistics provided by pro-football-reference.com, this marks only the fourth time in NFL history a former Alabama standout gained 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Don Hutson had 1,211 for Green Bay in 1942, and Ozzie Newsome had 1,002 in 1981 and 1,001 in 1984 for Cleveland.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — If it looked as if Alabama defensive back Robert Lester was trying for a touchdown on his interception against Auburn, he was.

“I wanted to get a touchdown,” he said. “It would have been my first touchdown ever playing football. I tried, but it wasn’t happening.”

Lester returned it 31 yards before being brought down at the Auburn 29. Lester said he didn’t get a touchdown even when he played at Foley High with current Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones. Lester said he didn’t play much offense at Foley.

“We had Julio,” he said, smiling. “There was no need.”

Saban still not a fan of recruiting rule that doesn’t let him travel in spring

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Alabama pulled in one of the school’s best recruiting classes in 2008, and the group still is affecting the team as it aims for a third national title in four years.

When asked about the class today, Tide coach Nick Saban took the opportunity for a small shot at a rule change shortly after he signed that class. Popularly known as the “Saban rule,” head football coaches aren’t allowed to go to high schools in the spring to evaluate players.

“I was still allowed to go out on the road, so I got to see most of those guys practice,” Saban said. “Probably the best recruiting class I’ve ever been associated with or been a part of assembling. The evaluation was good and the development of the players was really good. There were a lot of good people in that class. Obviously, the amount of success they’ve had certainly indicates the competitive character they have, the kind of people they have as well as their ability.”

Alabama signed five eventual NFL first-round draft choices (receiver Julio Jones, safety Mark Barron, defensive lineman Marcell Dareus, linebacker Dont’a Hightower and running back Mark Ingram), two second-round choices (linebacker Courtney Upshaw and noseguard Terrence Cody) and a seventh-round pick (H-back Brad Smelley).

Also, safety Robert Lester, defensive end Damion Square and tight end Michael Williams still are with the team and are three-year starters. Offensive lineman Barrett Jones is a four-year starter and likely will go within the first three rounds of the NFL draft, according to ESPN draft analysts.

Julio Jones sticks up for Alabama on Dan Patrick Show

The Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones (11) runs past the grasp of the Dallas Cowboys’ Gerald Sensabaugh (43) on Nov. 4. (AP photo by Rich Addicks)

Dan Patrick interviews athletes about as well as any radio or television show host around. He’s especially good at getting them to drop their guard and engage in a little fun give-and-take.

He did that with former Alabama All-America reciever Julio Jones recently, as Jones came on the show joking with Patrick, “I got a problem with you.”

The problem: Patrick has no Alabama helmet on the set of “The Dan Patrick Show,” in which plenty of sports memorabilia is placed in the background, including some college football helmets.

Patrick said he has Notre Dame, Georgia and Kansas State and would put up an Alabama helmet if he had one. Jones said he could make that happen for Patrick.

Here’s the whole segment. It’s 7:25 long. Patrick and Jones talk about Alabama for about the first four minutes. Then it’s on to discussion of Jones’ current team, the Atlanta Falcons. In the last 30 seconds or so, it’s back to Alabama and Patrick wanting Jones to get him a Tide helmet:

Julio Jones’ big catch in 2009: A view from New Orleans

Earlier this week, we brought you the video of Julio Jones’ memorable 73-yard touchdown in a 24-15 win over LSU in 2009.

Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune has written an excellent piece about that game and that play. Click here to read it.

Alabama trailed 15-13 with fewer than 11 minutes to play when Jones caught a short pass from Greg McElroy, then turned on the speed to score a touchdown, putting the Tide ahead for good.

“We practiced that all week,” Jones told Kleinpeter. “A situation like that, I feel like I should just step up and make the play. I did what I had to do.”

Here’s the video:

Alabama trailed 15-13 with fewer than 11 minutes to play when Jones caught a short pass from Greg McElroy, then turned on the speed to score a touchdown, putting the Tide ahead for good.

Here’s the video. It’s only 33 seconds, and if you’re at work and can’t turn up the sound, that’s fine. It’s just Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson.

Trent Richardson scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter of the Cleveland Browns’ 41-27 loss Sunday to the New York Giants, setting a team record in the process.

Richardson has scored a rushing touchdown in four straight games now, and no rookie in franchise history can match that, not even Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who led the NFL in rushing (942 yards) and rushing touchdowns (nine) during his rookie season in 1957.

This gives Richardson five touchdowns for the season. He entered today’s game tied for second in the NFL in touchdowns. As has happened often this season, the Browns trailed the whole second half and threw a lot in an attempt to catch up. As a result, Richardson carried the ball only 17 times for 81 yards, with 67 of those yards coming before intermission. He gained 47 receiving yards on five catches.

–Saints safety Roman Harper had a big game in New Orleans’ 31-24 win over San Diego. He had six tackles, including one for a loss, and three passes defended. In addition, he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned in 41 yards to set up a field goal.

New Orleans running back Mark Ingram carried five times for 16 yards. For San Diego, linebacker Jarret Johnson had three stops, including one for loss.

–For this afternoon’s Denver-New England game, the Patriots declared injured linebacker Dont’a Hightower (hamstring) inactive. New England won 31-21.

–Buffalo defensive lineman Marcell Dareus recovered a fumble and made two tackles, while fellow defensive lineman Mark Anderson added three stops. The Bills still lost 45-3 to San Francisco.

–Wide receiver Julio Jones caught 10 passes for 94 yards and had one rushing attempt for a yard as the Falcons beat Washington 24-17. Jones caught an 18-yard touchdown pass early in the final period. He also made a 29-yard reception to put the Falcons in position for the winning touchdown.

–Baltimore beat Kansas City 9-6. The Ravens’ Courtney Upshaw had two tackles and a fumble recovery, while teammate Terrence Cody had a pair of stops. The Chiefs’ Javier Arenas has a tackle and four punt returns for 8 yards.

–Defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry had a tackle in Cincinnati’s 17-13 loss to Miami.

–Linebacker DeMeco Ryans made a season-high 12 tackles as Philadelphia lost to Pittsburgh 16-14.

–In Thursday’s game, Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson had a pair of tackles as Arizona fell to St. Louis 17-3.

–Oakland (Rolando McClain) and Tampa Bay (Mark Barron) had a bye week. On Monday night, Houston (Kareem Jackson and Antoine Caldwell) will face the New York Jets (Greg McElroy).

Julio knows how to put the ball in the end zone

Because of an unspectacular game against Denver a week ago, former Alabama All-American Julio Jones ranks only 32nd in the NFL in receiving yards with 189, but he is shining in another area.

Jones has three touchdown catches for the Atlanta Falcons, which is tied for third. Tight ends Vernon Davis of San Francisco and Heath Miller of Pittsburgh are first with four each.

Jones has 15 catches, and if you translate out his numbers to a full season, he would have 80 catches, 1008 yards and 16 touchdowns. Close to first-team All-Pro numbers for the second-year NFL player.

Here is video of Jones’ latest touchdown, which came on a 9-yard pass against San Diego on Sunday:
