Alabama commit Derrick Henry’s final prep yardage totals

Alabama commitment Derrick Henry closed out his high school career with a 63-yard touchdown run Friday night. Unfortunately for Yulee High, it wasn’t enough as the Hornets fell 45-35 to Bolles in the Florida Class 4A state semifinals.

As you can see from the Twitter post above from The Florida Times-Union’s Justin Barney, Henry had another big night for Yulee in the loss.

His 316 yards gave him 12,124 for his high school career, which is a national record. He also finished the season with 4,260 yards for Yulee (9-4), which broke the state record of 4,087 set in 1996 by Travis Henry of Frostproof. Henry played at Tennessee.

Henry, who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, has announced on Twitter he will begin school at Alabama in January.

Tide recruit Derrick Henry goes for rushing record tonight (video)

Alabama football recruit Derrick Henry goes for the national high school rushing record tonight when he leads Yulee (Fla.) High against Taylor County in the Florida Class 4A playoffs.

Henry needs only 103 yards to pass the mark set about six decades ago. Ken Hall rushed for 11,232 yards for Sugar Land (Texas) High during 1950-53 before playing for Bear Bryant at Texas A&M.

Henry, who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, has 3,266 yards this season in 10 games for Yulee (7-3) and 11,130 for his career.

Both Henry and Hall did interviews with a Jacksonville, Fla., radio station this week. Here’s the video, which includes a few highlights of Henry and Hall in action:

Ken Hall comments on Tide recruit closing in on his record

Ken Hall told The Florida Times-Union the player who breaks his 59-year-old high school career rushing record should cherish it.

Hall rushed for 11,232 yards for Sugar Land (Texas) High during 1950-53, and Yulee (Fla.) High’s Derrick Henry stands only 103 yards from breaking it. Yulee will face Taylor County on Friday night in the Florida Class 4A playoffs, and considering Henry has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, it seems nearly certain he’ll break the mark in this game.

“People have asked what would be your feeling [if the record is broken],” Hall told the newspaper. “Well, we have had fun holding it. I sure hopes he has as much fun as we’ve had, whoever it is. I hope he feels some honor in it. It’s something to be very proud of. Cherish it, protect it, because he’ll be the one who has it.”

Henry, an Alabama commitment who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, has 3,266 yards this season in 10 games for Yulee (7-3).

Hall played three seasons at Texas A&M for Bear Bryant before embarking on a professional career in the Canadian Football League, the AFL and the NFL.

The national record book counts only the ninth through 12th grades, so Taylor has more overall yards than Henry because he played varsity as an eighth grader. Taylor has 11,659, including his eighth-grade numbers, entering tonight’s action.

If Alabama commitment Derrick Henry remains healthy, he should set the national career high school rushing record this season.

A 6-foot-3, 240-pound running back for Yulee (Fla.) High, he has 10,479 yards, which is 753 yards behind Ken Hall, who rushed for 11,232 yards for Sugar Land (Texas) High in 1950-53 before playing for Bear Bryant at Texas A&M. Henry has two regular-season games remaining and at least one playoff contest.

He needs to average 258 yards a game, which is below his season average of 328 a game. Yulee will play Trinity Christian on Friday and Hamilton County on Nov. 9. Both are road games. The playoffs start after that. Yulee (6-2) participates in Class 4A of Florida’s eight-classification system.

The national record book counts only the ninth through 12th grades, so some running backs have more overall yards than Henry because they played varsity as eighth graders.

When Hall played at Texas A&M for Bryant, he didn’t do a lot. Bryant said later that was his fault. Sports Illustrated wrote a fascinating story about Hall in 1982, quoting Bryant and some of Bryant’s former Texas A&M players. It’s long but worth the time for anyone who appreciates Bryant’s legacy. It’s admirable Bryant not only could admit he was wrong, but years after the fact, he took time to write Hall a letter and apologize for not using him as he should have.
