Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly spoke with reporters today for the first time since the Irish lost 42-14 to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

He talked about linebacker Manti Te’o, whose dead girlfriend turned out to be a hoax.

“Hindsight is 20-20. I didn’t think going into the game he was affected by it. But he didn’t play his best. Alabama had something to do with that, clearly. But I really don’t know,” Kelly said. “It’s a lot to weigh on the shoulders of somebody. I think we can make the leap that maybe it did. But I think Manti would know for sure.”

In light of the Te’o girlfriend hoax, you knew this was coming, didn’t you?

How long did you figure we would have to wait until this happened? You knew somebody eventually would say the hoax involving Manti Te’o was at least partially responsible for Notre Dame losing so badly to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

By the way, the Twitter post above comes from an organization that claims no affiliation with Notre Dame or the Fighting Irish football team. It’s just a fan group.

I’m not buying the hoax affected the outcome of that game. Notre Dame’s own athletics director, Jack Swarbrick, said only a couple of coaches and a couple of Manti Te’o's teammates knew his girlfriend dying of leukemia was a hoax until Deadspin.com’s story Wednesday. If only a handful of people knew about it when Notre Dame and Alabama kicked off, how could it have kept the Irish from playing competitively?

The curious case of the girlfriend of Manti Te’o

Was Manti Te’o‘s dead girlfriend a hoax? A meticulously researched piece by deadspin.com seems to unravel the story of the Stanford girl and the Notre Dame linebacker, who led his team to the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama.

Yes, this is a Notre Dame story, not Alabama. But considering the Crimson Tide played against Te’o in the biggest game of the year, we thought you might have enough awareness and interest in Te’o to warrant posting this.

During a BCS National Championship Game news conference Jan. 3, Te’o was asked about his grandmother and girlfriend. Here is a transcript:

Question: Manti, how have the football-related commotion and excitement of the past year helped you get through the turmoil you’ve faced with your grandmother and girlfriend? And how have the quiet periods been for you, given you more time to reflect? Is that a good thing or double edged?

Te’o: I think whenever you’re in football, it takes your mind off a lot of things. You know, this team is very special to me, and the guys on it have always been there for me, through the good times and the bad times. I rarely have a quiet time to myself because I always have somebody calling me, asking, do you want to go to the movies. Coach is always calling me asking me, “Are you okay? Do you need anything?” I have three roommates, Zeke, Carlo and Robby Toma, who are always yelling at each other, who’s going to play Call of Duty. I’m rarely by myself, and that’s how I like it. I’m always around my guys, always around my family.

In honor of the father of Manti Te’o

Brian Te’o or somebody claiming to be him has posted on the “Manti Te’o ‘Official’ Fan Club” page on Facebook, asking for a boycot of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Manti Te’o is, of course, Notre Dame’s All-America linebacker. The person claiming to be Brian Te’o posted a complaint about the newspaper running the headline “Bowled Over” on a photo of Alabama’s Eddie Lacy, well, bowling over Manti Te’o.

Here’s the post: “Our family has been very gracious to the Star Advertiser by providing interviews and photos of our son in the recent weeks. On our way home from Miami we were “privileged” to see how the Star Advertiser returns that favor by posting a photo of our son “presumably” being “bowled over” by the Alabama RB. So, from this point forward, Star Advertiser you have been officially black listed. I will no longer agree to any more interviews, sharing of photos, or anything else, and I will encourage all who have a subscription to your newspaper to not renew. Be more responsible in the future…if you can.” Brian Te’o

The best response on the Facebook thread came from Facebook user Todd Hinckley: “Should I cancel my Directv because I had to watch his missed tackles for 3 hours ?”

In honor of Brian Te’o, here’s another photo I’m sure he’ll like, courtesy of my friend and co-worker, Gary Cosby, who got this shot of Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon bowling over Te’o.
