After a 30-minute delay (for unknown reasons), the Crimson Tide football team took to Bryant-Denny Stadium for its second spring scrimmage, the final one before A-Day next Saturday.

Here is some video from the scrimmage, with photos, stats and full coverage coming to the blog soon.

Football Notebook: Practice update, 2015 season opener and more

The Crimson Tide has taken the field for its third spring practice, with just two more remaining before the team gets time off for spring break. Here is the big news from the media viewing period.

– Starting linebacker from 2012 Xzavier Dickson worked out with the defensive linemen on Wednesday. It was not uncommon for Dickson to put a hand on the ground in certain defensive alignments throughout the course of last season, but he generally practiced with the linebackers.

– Linebacker Denzell Devall was working alongside Adrian Hubbard in Dickson’s place.

– As for the interior linebackers, Tana Patrick was working ahead of Reggie Ragland in individual drills. The job is still very much up for grabs, but as it stands right now, Patrick is on top.

– The left guard battle seems to be heating up, as both Chad Lindsay and Arie Kouandjio were working with the first team. The other four starters, Cyrus Kouandjio at left tackle, Ryan Kelly at center, Anthony Steen at right guard and Austin Shepherd at right tackle were in tact as they were before.

– Finally, Alabama lost both players listed as long snappers on last year’s depth chart, Carson Tinker and Kelly Johnson, to exhausted eligibilities. Alabama had two walk-ons at the position in practice, likely waiting it out for the arrival of incoming freshman Cole Mazza.

Return to Dallas set for 2015

Not long after releasing the information of athletic director Mal Moore’s resignation (which you can read more about by clicking here), Alabama released that it has come to an agreement to face the Wisconsin Badgers to open the 2015 season in the Cowboys Classic.

Alabama started the 2012 season with an appearance in the Cowboys Classic, beating Michigan 42-14. Southeastern Conference teams are 2-0 in the Cowboys Classic, as Alabama’s victory followed up a 40-27 win for LSU over Oregon in 2011. LSU is featured in the 2013 Cowboys Classic, meeting the TCU Horned Frogs.

Alabama has not lost to a Big Ten team since its loss in the Music City Bowl after the 2004 season to Minnesota, 20-16.

Dave Hart voices dedication to Vols

Former Alabama assistant athletic director and current Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart went on with a Knoxville sports radio station in the wake of Moore’s resignation and talked about his name popping up as a potential replacement.

Some strong (making field goal posts sway violently, strong) winds, followed by rain, forced the Alabama Crimson Tide inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility for its second spring practice. Here are the notes, with video posted at the bottom.

– Wide receiver Kevin Norwood and cornerback John Fulton were still held out of practice, but still found a way to compete thanks to a push-up contest sparked by strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran, who was working with them before and after the contest. Cochran won. Video is posted below.

– Offensive lineman Anthony Steen got reps at left guard, right guard and right tackle in practice, but most of his reps came at right guard alongside projected starting center Ryan Kelly. Also seen running with starters were Chad Lindsay, Austin Shepherd and Kellen Williams.

– Quarterback Blake Sims not only did not throw, but did not do much of anything in practice today. He didn’t seem to be experiencing excruciating pain, but regardless was not practicing.

– True freshman quarterback Cooper Bateman seems to be moving along quite nicely, working his way ahead of practice squad walk-on Edward Aldag, but still behind starter AJ McCarron and backups Phillip Ely and Alec Morris. This may not sound like much, but it is more than what the other two true freshman quarterbacks, Parker McLeod and Luke Del Rio, can say at this point.

– Wide receiver Christion Jones and running back Dee Hart were still working with the defensive backs, and from what I was able to see, it appears that Jones’ transition is going more smooth than Hart’s is.

– Tight end/H-Back Brian Vogler seems to be leading the rotation at that position. The distribution of players between the H-Back and tight end position could have an impact on depth chart decisions, however.

Daily Bama Blog correspondent Brett Hudson, like he did for the BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, will count you down to the beginning of spring practice with another series. Each day, Brett will break down a different position group going into spring practice until the beginning of practice on March 16. Here is the schedule.
Thursday: Quarterbacks (click here to read it)
Friday: Running backs (click here to read it)
Saturday: Wide receivers (click here to read it)
Yesterday: Tight ends/H-Backs (click here to read it)
Today: Offensive Line
Tomorrow: Defensive Line
Wednesday: Linebackers/Pro Day
March 14: Cornerbacks
March 15: Safeties
March 16: Opening day of spring practice

This may be the hot-button issue of spring training: the boys in the trenches that so ritually decide the outcome of games. The drama surrounding this group are the three starters from the prevous two national championship teams that must be replaced before the journey for a three-peat can begin.

It all starts at the anchor, where Barrett Jones leaves a large void in both talent, football IQ and leadership. Alabama seems to favor Ryan Kelly to replace him. Kelly, from West Chester, Ohio, will enter the 2013 season as a redshirt sophomore after playing off the bench in nine games in 2012 and being named to the SEC-All Freshman Team.

At guard, Anthony Steen is sure to keep his spot as a starter, and Alabama has options to replace Warmack. Chad Lindsey and Leon Brown could both step in guards, plus guard Arie Kouandjio. If the name Kouandjio looks familiar, that’s because his younger brother, Cyrus, has quite the lock on his starting tackle position from last season.

Just like the guard position that needs to be filled, Alabama has options to replace D.J. Fluker. Both Brown and Lindsey could fit in as a tackle, as could Brandon Green, Brandon Hill, Alphonse Taylor and incoming freshman Grant Hill.

Breakdown: One senior (Steen), five juniors (Brown, C. Kouandjio, A. Kouandjio, Lindsey, Shepherd), two sophomores (Kelly, Hill), two redshirt freshmen (Taylor, Greene), one freshman (Hill).

Prediction: The obvious starters will hold their spots, being Kouandjio and Steen, and Kelly should establish a firm hold on the center spot. But the others need to buckle up: they’re in a battle that could easily last throughout the spring up until the first week of the regular season.

Thoughts from Thursday’s Alabama football practice

Alabama went through its seventh practice today as it prepares for its BCS National Championship Game appearance. The Crimson Tide worked out in full pads inside its indoor practice facility. It marked the second practice in two days after the team took a three-day break for Christmas.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has said he wants to duplicate the 65- to 70-degree temperature the Tide will face when it plays in Miami’s Sun Life Stadium, and it’s quite a bit colder than that in Tuscaloosa this afternoon.

Alabama center Barrett Jones still isn’t practicing. During the 16-minute part of practice reporters were allowed to view, Jones stood on the sideline opposite of us, wearing a black non-contact jersey with a black walking boot on his injured left foot. He did some light exercises under the direction of Tide strength coach Scott Cochran.

Today marks 26 days since he injured his foot in the SEC Championship Game’s opening quarter. He didn’t have his best game of the season in the 32-28 win over Georgia, but it he still is wearing a walking boot nearly four weeks later, then it’s almost unbelievable to think he played that day and was reasonably effective. I’m not sure how he managed it.

For Alabama, the good part of Jones missing these practices is that backup Ryan Kelly, an All-SEC Freshman Team member, is getting plenty of work with the first-team line.

Freshman linebacker Denzel Devall wore a black non-contact jersey, too, and appeared more active than Jones. He worked under the direction of Tide trainer Jeff Allen, too, walking from one sideline to the other and back again. Sometimes he would do side steps. Other times he walked in a zig-zag. And other times he walked a straight line. He also did some small jumps, lifting only about two or three inches off the ground, if that much. That’s still more verticle leap than I have.

Wide receiver Kenny Bell (leg) wasn’t at practice, as he was before Christmas break. Noseguard Jesse Williams (knee) practiced but wasn’t doing a whole lot during the media viewing period. Cornerback Dee Milliner sat out some drills in the final practices before Christmas break, but he appeared to be doing everything today.

We have some video of Devall doing his walks. We don’t have Jones because he remained on the other sideline, which was too far away for my camera phone.
