More from Spring Practice No. 2

Since Coach Saban and the players are not available to the media after today’s practice, I thought I would just give you a couple bonus photos from practice and give you the link to all of the coverage when Saban and players were available to media on Saturday.

Some strong (making field goal posts sway violently, strong) winds, followed by rain, forced the Alabama Crimson Tide inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility for its second spring practice. Here are the notes, with video posted at the bottom.

– Wide receiver Kevin Norwood and cornerback John Fulton were still held out of practice, but still found a way to compete thanks to a push-up contest sparked by strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran, who was working with them before and after the contest. Cochran won. Video is posted below.

– Offensive lineman Anthony Steen got reps at left guard, right guard and right tackle in practice, but most of his reps came at right guard alongside projected starting center Ryan Kelly. Also seen running with starters were Chad Lindsay, Austin Shepherd and Kellen Williams.

– Quarterback Blake Sims not only did not throw, but did not do much of anything in practice today. He didn’t seem to be experiencing excruciating pain, but regardless was not practicing.

– True freshman quarterback Cooper Bateman seems to be moving along quite nicely, working his way ahead of practice squad walk-on Edward Aldag, but still behind starter AJ McCarron and backups Phillip Ely and Alec Morris. This may not sound like much, but it is more than what the other two true freshman quarterbacks, Parker McLeod and Luke Del Rio, can say at this point.

– Wide receiver Christion Jones and running back Dee Hart were still working with the defensive backs, and from what I was able to see, it appears that Jones’ transition is going more smooth than Hart’s is.

– Tight end/H-Back Brian Vogler seems to be leading the rotation at that position. The distribution of players between the H-Back and tight end position could have an impact on depth chart decisions, however.

Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran vividly remembers stepping into his workplace, Alabama’s recently-completed weight room upgrade, with his son and asking him how many script A’s he sees around the facility, a question his son could only answer with something to the effect of, “a lot.”

Alabama’s news weight room was recently opened to the media, a tour led by the master of the operation, Cochran. Cochran made no hesitations to express his satisfaction with the new facility, saying the new building has, “everything I could ever dream of and then some.”

The 37,000-square foot facility opens directly to both the indoor and outdoor practice fields, fitting into the theme of the IMG_5464economization of the workout process. Cochran made a point to fit as many exercises into one station as possible and keeping all workout necessities as close to each other as possible.

Cochran said the proximity of it all makes his job much easier, but might make it harder for the players.

“They don’t have to jog across the gym to do the next lift,” Cochran said.

The facility, complete with several mounted flat-screen televisions on the walls, also has a nutrition station where nutritionist Amy Bragg ensures the players are correctly nourished.

Cochran said he always has video of how to do certain lifts or exercises properly on the televisions, to let the players see how to do what they should be doing.

But his favorite part of the facility is not the fancy machines or innovative technology, but the sound system. The very, very loud sound system.

Cochran said both current players and recruits immediately smile when they walk in the weight room and hear the sound system at its maximum level: “You can’t help but smile.”

Tide line recruit works hard to lose weight

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Incoming offensive lineman Brandon Hill doesn’t mind saying he’s overweight. After all, it gives him a chance to talk about how much more overweight he used to be.

A signee out of Hargrave Military Academy, Hill enrolled in January with 406 pounds on his 6-foot-7 frame. He said he weighs 390 now and aims to be at 350 by the beginning of preseason practice in August.

Hill said it has helped to work with Tide strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran. In addition, he has received guidance from nutitionists at Alabama.

For example, he said he used to think sports drinks were good for him but was told they have sugar that adds weight.

“They said wait a minute, if you take water you’ll be good,” he said.

Gene Stallings presents award to Barrett Jones in Coleman Coliseum

There wasn’t a whole lot of cheering going on in the second half of Alabama’s 69-59 loss to Vanderbilt. Halftime was a different story when Gene Stallings presented Barrett Jones with a sportsmanship award. Yes, that’s Scott Cochran standing next to Jones. Here’s the video:

Up-close video with Richardson, RBs practicing indoors

I can’t remember the last time the Alabama football team practiced indoors early in the week. It rained today, so they were in “the barn” as the players call it. Take a look at the running backs workout with a playful Scott Cochran adding some life to the routine.

Video of Scott Cochran stripping fumbles from Tide RBs

To say Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran has a cult following is outdated. He’s gone mainstream.

The man with an unstoppable motor and incredible volume in his speaking voice had some fun with Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy and company at Tuesday’s indoor practice. Take a look for yourself.

Kirby Smart gets another raise

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart got another raise this afternoon. The UA Board of Trustees compensation committee approved a bump in pay from$750,000 annually to $850,000. Just a year ago, he was making $360,000.

His contract still calls for a $72,000 buyout if he takes any other job other than a head coaching position.

Strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran also got a raise from $225,000 to $290,000.

In other news, a certain group Alabama fans really don’t want Auburn to win the BCS National Championship Game. They have even made “Roll Ducks Roll” shirts in support of Oregon. See them here.

Assistant coaching moves plentiful today

It only took about five hours to drive back down to Alabama from Louisville. Apparently that’s enough time for one Alabama assistant coach to leave and another was reportedly hired.

Now former Crimson Tide defensive line coach Bo Davis is headed to Texas to take the exact same job.

Don’t freshen those resume’s just yet. Multiple reports indicate Clemson defensive line back Chris Rumph is headed to Tuscaloosa.

Nick Saban issued a statement wishing Davis well but made no announcement of a replacement hire.

In other assistant coaching news, the contracts are up for discussion on tomorrow’s compensation committee meeting of the UA Board of Trustees. That likely means raises for defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran.

Read more in print tomorrow.

Rare video of Scott Cochran stretching drills

Get ready to see Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran in his element — running around stretching drills quoting rap songs and loving life.

The media isn’t typically permitted to film this stuff so this is rare. He’s truly one of a kind.

And more photos added to album too.

VIDEO: Scott Cochran and a broken blocking sled

Here are two quick looks inside Alabama football practice from this afternoon. First, strength and conditioning guru Scott Cochran makes his rounds, spreading cheer.

Next, defensive line coach Bo Davis teaches the proper technique for hitting the sled. After several reps, the equipment breaks down.
