Mark Sept. 14 on your calendar … well, even more than you typically mark your calendar for an Alabama football weekend.

According to Sports Illustrated’s “Way-too-early” college football rankings, the top two teams in the country will play that day. SI has Alabama No. 1 in its rankings, and Texas A&M at No. 2. The Crimson Tide and Aggies will kick off in College Station, Texas, on Sept. 14.

Click here to see the whole top 25. Here’s a taste of what SI reporter Andy Staples has written: “Replacing Barrett Jones, Chance Warmack and D.J. Fluker on the offensive line won’t be easy — even for a program that essentially selects 25 of the nation’s top 200 high school players each year. But if any team can overcome that loss, it’s Alabama. The Crimson Tide have proven themselves uniquely capable of reloading after national title runs. AJ McCarron showed in the BCS title game why he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and he’ll still get to hand off to T.J. Yeldon and throw to Amari Cooper. Meanwhile, linebacker C.J. Mosley returns for his senior season. Even though everyone knows Mosley is one of the nation’s best at his position, he wants to prove to coach Nick Saban that he can be a full-time player. Such is the embarrassment of riches in Tuscaloosa. Even an elite talent can’t always get on the field.”

The Associated Press won’t release its preseason poll until August, but if the AP rankings mirror this set from SI, it will mark the first time since 1957 Texas A&M was ranked that high. Bear Bryant’s final Aggies team was No. 2 in the opening poll that year.

The school was No. 4 in 1993 and No. 3 in 1995. Those two seasons and 1957 are the only times Texas A&M has made the preseason top five.

Alabama’s Eddie Lacy wound up on another Sports Illustrated cover.

The Crimson Tide running back made the cover after Alabama beat Georgia in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game and again today, following a 42-14 win over Notre Dame in the BCS title contest.

He was named most outstanding offensive player after rushing for 140 yards against the Irish and scoring a pair of touchdowns.

CBS/SI studies college football arrests, finds 5 at Bama

It’s nice to see some investigative journalism doing quality digging in this modern world of instant news. You have to check out this week’s edition of Sports Illustrated when it hits your doorstep.

Along with CBS News, the magazine did an exhaustive study of its preseason top-25 exploring arrest records of players. Of the 2,800-plus players studied, 7 percent had some kind of criminal record not including minor offenses like open container violations.

That sample group included Alabama — the No. 1 preseason team — but not eventual champion Auburn since it didn’t crack the top 25. SI reported five Alabama players had criminal records. The online version of the story found here does not name individual Alabama players. Only two comes to mind.

  • Linebacker Courtney Upshaw was arrested for third-degree domestic violence for an argument he had with a girlfriend in August, 2009. The charges were dropped after completing an anger management class.
  • As a high school senior in May of 2009, linebacker Nico Johnson was charged with a misdemeanor “verbal harassment.” He was later acquitted.
  • The December arrest of signee Aaron Douglas does not seem to figure into the five since he wasn’t on the roster at the time.

Alabama was nowhere close to having the most with criminal records. Pittsburgh took the dubious title with 22 while Arkansas was third with 18 to lead (sorta) the SEC.

McElroy a finalist for major award

No, not this major award, but it is pretty big in its own right.

Greg McElroy was one of 10 quarterbacks still in the running for the Unitas Golden Arm award when the finalists were announced Monday.

He also landed on the finalist list for The Wuerffel Trophy named for the former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner. The award goes to the college player who mixes academic and athletic success with community service.

Late last week, McElroy was also nominated for one of the most coveted prizes in athletics — the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. He was asked about that one today and this is what he said:

That was pretty cool, I must say. It was something that totally blind-sided me. I was not expecting it whatsoever. Obviously, I’d heard of Sportsman of the Year. I have probably every one of those dating back to 1988 when I was born. It’s remarkable when you look at the people that have won it in the past and look at the people that have been nominated in the past. It’s just a tremendous honor to even be mentioned in the same breath. I just am very glad that Mr. (Lars) Anderson appreciates how much I care about this sport, how much I care about this team and university because it’s my life. I just try to bring the most back not only from a football standpoint but also from an academic standpoint. I’m glad that that’s been appreciated by one of the Sports Illustrated writers, and it’s just a great honor.

The complete finalist list for the Unitas award:

  • Andy Dalton, TCU
  • Pat Devlin, University of Delaware
  • Nathan Enderle, Idah
  • Colin Kaepernick, Nevada
  • Jake Locker, Washington
  • Greg McElroy, Alabama
  • Christian Ponder, Florida State
  • Ricky Stanzi , Iowa
  • Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech
  • Scott Tolzien, Wisconsin

Really? Another Alabama cover of Sports Illustrated

This week's SI

For the bagillionth time in the past year, Alabama football landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated. This time, Trent Richardson earned the honor and the long-debated curse.

Just a few weeks back, Crimson Tide defenders Marcell Dareus, Dont’a Hightower and Mark Barron made the cover of the football preview edition.

Before that, Mark Ingram was on there twice and Colin Peek once more.

The cover will hit news stands later this week.
