As its first summer under new football coach Jamey DuBose winds down, Florence traveled to Marietta, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Invitational 7-on-7 tournament this weekend.
The event’s 24-team field features some strong competition from that state, including two 2011 state runners-up, as well as several teams from the Southeast, including Hoover.
Florence went 3-2 in pool play Saturday, winning 21-12 against Centennial (Ga.), 26-6 against Northview (Ga.) and 26-2 over Chattanooga (Tenn.) Christian. The Falcons lost 21-14 to undefeated Hillgrove (Ga.), despite leading 14-5 at one point, and 17-16 to Kell (Ga.).

Florence finished pool play in a three-way tie for the ninth seed but got it via tiebreaker by allowing 58 points in five games, the fewest among those three teams and the second fewest among those teams remaining in the tournament, trailing Hoover’s 43 points allowed.
The top eight seeds get built-in byes to open Sunday’s bracket play, but Florence also draws a bye as its first-round opponent, Flowery Branch (Ga.), is no longer competing. The Falcons instead start bracket play with a rematch against Kell at 8:30 a.m. and could face top-seeded Hoover next in the semifinals at 11 a.m.
The Georgia Invitational winner earns a berth in National Select 7-on-7 championship in Hoover on July 26-27. As the host, Hoover has an auto berth in nationals, as does Georgia Invitational host Lassiter. If either of those teams win this weekend’s tournament, the runner-up will go to nationals.
